Have a little search, I'm sure this has been covered a couple of times
or try www.s2central.net or www.s2-audi.co.uk. Why do you ask, as that may help focus the response

Quick answer is the internals and stock EM and turbo are virtually the same if not identical. The big differences are the 3B and ABY have the intake manifolds with the throttle body at the back of the engine whereas the AAN has the throttle body closer to the front of the engine. The 3B makes 220 hp using a single coil, distributor and sparkplug wires. The AAN and ABY have a different ECU that controls 5 coil-on-plug coils and, as result, stock the AAN and ABY made 230 DIN hp.
You could read this, a little 20 valve turbo in-line five history:

thanks guys, helped a lot. I have read as much on the development on the 5 as I have been able to find, but never found much out on the spec differences. the reason I asked is to determine whether any particular spec is tougher or more tuneable. I don't own one as yet, but think its better to ask these questions before I look. I need that 5 pot howl!Comment

Yup, well worth asking & researching
Usually depends on budget, aims and usage but they all have their own character but can be mixed and matched... ABY with 3B flywheel and RS2 turbo is a pretty good spec... I should know
