    Smoking Audi RS2

    Hi there

My RS2, when hot and at idle, emits white smoke.
When you pull off, the idle's a bit lumpy, but eventually settles down to normal ish idle.
Also, it seems to be over fuelling - rich fuel smell as well as a slight misfire.
The shop that maintains it, reckons this could be the following:
    1. Fuel pressure regulator - misfire, over fuelling and possibly smoke
    2. Water pump - smoke which requires change of all belts and tensioner

Question is: unless I'm wrong, the water pump could be a result of leaking water - and this isn't the case cause I haven't topped up the water. Should I just attend to the regulator and see if the problem persists? Could it be something else?

Would really appreciate some insight on this.

    Cheers

You said that car emits white smoke?? If that is true then it would not be related to fuel. When car smokes due to richt mixture then smoke is black. You masy still have fueling issue but it will not be related to white smoke.

You are not loosing any water you say?

A good service, change of oil/fuel filter and spark plugs might be a good way to start, at least that's how I see it.

        Hi guys

Its got 163k km, and was last serviced at 160k km around March timeline.
Yes not losing water - ie not having to top it up.
The smoke, yes is white coloured smoke - when its hot and at idle.
On the odd occasion, you get black smoke ie: at change up to pick up speed on the freeway.

          Blue smoke = oil

          Black smoke = soot = overfuelling/running rich

White smoke = coolant/water = head gasket, especially on idle when there is more engine vacuum.

Thanks for that - kinda of scary honestlyt.
So head gasket, would that require the head to be skimmed / machined as well?
What other work would be advisable to do if the head will be taken off?

Just adding in here, if you are doing the headgasket, you may as well do a full head refresh, skim if necessary, stem steals and valve guides guides, etc

Some might add to do the timing belt, which would mean water pump, and lower timing belt pully, and crank bolt. Just a note that the RS2/ ADU water pump is No Longer Available from audi,
but the ABY one is, but you will have to use an ABY timing belt with that water pump, a timing belt which is also NLA from Audi. But available from OEM manufacturer (Gates)

Not to mention the gaskets you will need ....

QQ: could the symptoms mentioned in my earlier post possibly be related to either Temp switch / Lambda sensor?

you could start with a basic compression test , easy to do ,and a good basic check on engine health

That was done today, and the engine temp ranged from 83 to 93 degree's.
Question on the lambda stems from an error on the VAG related to the Lambda wires.
