    ABY Going into Limp Mode

    As per title.

My ABY Avant keeps going to limp mode as regards the boost.

I've checked for boost leaks and found a big one with tear hole at a joint in an oem pipe, pipe replaced.

Small leaks at plastic injector seats - cured.

N75 changed to a second hand good one.

Pipe for the N75 valve to the waste gate replaced.

Still the same problem. I now personally understand other people's annoyance with similar threads in the past.

When one drives the car on initial cold start up it will boost. The warming up of hte engine only appears to make slight difference in that one a bit warm it is b bit more likely to go limp mode, but to be honest I may be only imagining this subtle difference.

When it goes into limp mode on the next wot, it will only go to 0.5 bar on the gauge.

If one turns the ignition off for a split second it will boost fine on the next wot, on the subsequent one it will be back to limp .5 bar.

If one just drives on a very light throttle after finding it in limp mode after an attempted wot, the boost sometimes comes back without the need to cut the ignition to restore boost.

It should only boost to 1.5, but the after market gauge has shown as high as 1.8 on the gauge, and then it settles back down a more normal 1.5bar.

Is is like it is over boosting and the Motronic ECU's safety of the limp mode is cutting in, which is understandable, but I can't work out what is causing it to over boost / go into limp mode ?

    Fried ABY with K-24.

    Doing my head in.

Brakes are pulsing and I think it needs a bomb, flushed the fuluid full lat night no difference, a whole other thread.

    These cars !!!!

    Any input appreciated.

Mine did this last week and it was the throttle position sensor on the back of the inlet manifold had come loose.

There are also sometimes issues with the pins in the G69 / F60 Throttle valve position potentiometer /idle switch connector (very much the same as the MAF connector pin issues)

Info about the connector pins is in this G69 / F60 Throttle valve position potentiometer /idle switch information post:

Just been out testing with a multimeter, like I should have done from the outset.

I think it is my G69, which is the switch on the throttle body relating to throttle's position, as it only reads to 1990 ohms before going to an infinite reading, just after opening the throttle. It should read about 3600 ohms at wot.

Will know for sure when I test the same switch on two AANs cars tomorrow.

Thanks Dave for all of your posts / links.

Tomorrow, I mean later today, will tell a tale.

Mid morning, using a multimeter to test the ohms on wires 2 and 3 of the throttle positon potentiometer on the throttlebody, they both metered out the same as the one on the S2 Avant, so no futher along to working out what is causing it to go into limp mode.

Browned off as I thought I had diagnosed the cause of the limp mode last night.

It now also has started chucking / hesitant on a constant throttle, but that goes away as soon as one puts it under load by pressing the accelerator a bit.

Need to swop in another ECU, but if the existing ECU has an active immobiliser matched to it's key, will I still be able to switch in a non immobiliser ECU and have it work with the car's existing ignition switch and key ?

Unplug the MFTS to see if it's shot. It's got the ability to spoil the party.

If you want a laugh David mine is doing this too now, and remember that turbo outlet hose we chopped up for your car, mine is cracked now in the same place

Willing to bet its just another boost leak so we can test it all again this weekend if your about.

Didn't realise cars could empathise with their peers / develop contagion.

We'll need to keep them further apart.

Not around this weekend, now driving the silver one, in case I burn the blue one.

                            HI Rusty,

Will try the MFTS, which is fresh enough, but do need to verify the integrity of it's wiring connector tbh.

But won't be able to for about 10 days.

Still the break from it will do me no harm. Blood pressure might come down a few bar.
