    Maf question

I have received a maf, as the wire in my original was broken,
Looking at the two side by side, there almost identicle, numbers match ect..

But on the one that was on car when I bought it, when looking at the plug, just to the left of it there is a recessed brass screw, wich looks like it had a cap over it, anti tamper cap I think ?

One of my first post on here was asking if the maf,s were adjustable/calibratable, because of the screw

Got an answer of no, so I thought no more of it, but seeing the one that I have to fit now, which does not have the screw, I'm curious as to the purpose of it if anyone can help ?

Also can I use carb cleaner to clean it ?

If I can get my head around windows 8 I'll post a pic if someone wants to see the screw mentioned !

    Thanks

    Steve

If the screw has been tampered with the MAF is useless and it's readings as well.

            cheers PRJ,

i never went at the screw, but im positive that it has been tampered with before, the car had some serious boosting issues when i bought it..

makes alot of sense now thanks..

the one that i have now, does not have the screw..

whats your stance on using some wynns arosol carb cleaner on the maf im going to fit..

with screens or without, sorry for all the questions

I believe the screw is for calibration so don't mess with it. It was only on RR and 3B engines as far as i know. Carb cleaner should be fine, just hold the can at a good distance so you dont blast the hotwire out of it, but if it aint visibly dirty leave it alone.

Windows 8 isnt bad when you get used to it, infact as an OS its the best yet, its just the user interface that could do with being finished. For example it took me a while to figure out where the power menu was hidden to shutdown the machine. Crazy when i an IT engineer using Microsoft products since Windows v2 couldn't figure that out, had to resort the old ctrl+alt+del menu. I mean how did that get past usability testing

haha.. funny that as it took 2 people here to turn it off

cheers for the info on the MAF, im nearly sure when i asked that question originally people thought i was a bit daft lol..

full circle now and all is clear and i will give the replacement maf a clean with the stuff.

its looks ok, just want to do what i can before i whack it all back in

                cheers

I usually don't advise people to clean them as it can cause more problems. Only reason i would ever clean one is if the car ran with a K&N filter and built up a layer of oil on the wires. Under normal circumstances it shouldn't be needed as the MAF has its own self cleaning routing.

ill be very carefull, there is a coating of oil within the maf itself, which could be from a oiled filter...

while im on the subject, plugging in the maf turning on and off the ignition and watching the wire, i should see the burn off right ?

probably a question answered to death but is there a set amount of time the ignition has to be on ?

or does it have to be started first for a burnoff to occour ?

                    thanks

When the engine is turned off, the holding relay in the ECU provides power to the MAF hot wire for 5 seconds to burn off the crud. This is discussed in this MAF post:

I have a spare 471K MAF in my hand from my Oct. 92 built 93 UrS4 (I am running an RS2 MAF). It has the calibration screw (but it is still behind the tamper-proof plug (never touched)).
