It must be a day to get motivated sorting cars...

After re-fitting my Golf TDi back box, sorting a few issues coming up on vag-com, and a successful test drive I decided to clear the garage and move in the RS2. It's insured so I took it for a blast - first time since July of last year, when i parked it due to overheating problems.

After a quick blast up a country road behind our house I parked up, Fan and afterrun cut in as expected but would not cool her down, iust like yours the top of the rad is hot but the bottom is warm. The stat was suggested in a thread I started, stuck closed would cause this. Hot water return is to the bottom of the ran from the stat housing right?? It was well pressurised and removing the cap caused bubbling in the head as you described.

Iit'll be interesting what yours turns out to be. Mine is a recent rebuild so I'm going to re-check head bolt torque, might be worth looking at. I'm hoping to remove the thermostat and test it in the next week or so, just need motivation to start pulling it apart now!

I opened up my thermostat hosing to make sure that it had not stuck. One other thing I thought it could be was just build of of crap in the rad due to standing.
My rad was re cored but being a copper one I sure they would be more susceptible to crudding up. Maybe a can of rad flush and bleeding the system as per this post

      would help

I rebuilt mine about a year ago, I thought hot water went into rad at the top and fed in to the engine at the bottom. I am pretty sure that thermostats can only fit one
way as well which is something that crossed my mind.

I did run a compression test just to make sure that I had not over cooked it again. After ruining some new coolant through it seems to be heating as a whole rad and circulating better.

One thing i did not check is the arrow position on the thermostat, I believe it is supposed to face down and incorrect orientation can cause problems with air locks.

Did you find solution to this ? I have read Ross thread also.

I have cleaned and flushed my Rad not sigh of muck, back flushed it from the drain hold underneath seems to have plenty of flow

          New stat

          New temperature switch

Done all the correct steps of bleeding

But when I shut down the engine, I hear the boiling sound of water from the head as far as I can tell the engine is well bleed

          anyone have any Ideas ?

I am pretty sure that you have got an air lock, they can be a pain. I drained and refilled. Bear in mind general consensus is that the new MFTS sensor read higher then the originals .

It really helps if you lift the header tank up above the level of the matrix and pressurise the system

problem of boiling possibly solved, as I had flushed the system a few time and then refilled to check it was working as should, I had used more water than normal . I have now added the correct amount of anti freeze which seem to have cured it
