Strange one - S2 using water

Last couple of times I have driven the S2 (3b) it has given me the beep beep water warning and not because it is just having a bad day going round too many left handers.

I have had to top up the header tank with approx 0.5-0.75 litres of water as the level is a good inch or so below the max/min seam line. I noticed the small indented recess on the top of the tank is full of pink coolant. My first thought was there might be a small crack in the bottom of the recess but then thought it would probably suck it back in when the system wasnt pressurised.

Could it possibly be a faulty header tank cap that is allowing water/coolant to escape when under pressure? It screws on nice and tight (is a bloody pain to undo sometimes) I cannot understand how this little recess on top of the tank is filling up. Whatever is escaping, I assume it evaporating under the heat of the bonnet etc but the small pool remains in this recess. Expansion tank looks fairly old (grimey brownish colour)

Temp gauge is behaving fine, car is driving fine, no loss of anything that I can tell other than a bizarre loss of water.

Anyone had anything similar before? Cannot see any dampness on the carpets, so thinking matrix is fine and although the aux rad has seen better days, the main radiator is pretty much spanking new. Cannot see any signs of leakage from any pipes coming around the cooling system.

Hoping it is nothing serious but obviously concerning. Suggestions welcome, cheers guys.

    Three things:

    1. http://forums.quattroworld.com/s4s6/msgs/74902.phtml

    2. Heater matrix? Heater control valves? They can leak/wee[ a bit and result in seemingly perplexing loss of coolant (BTDT).

    3. After-run coolant pump: http://forums.quattroworld.com/s4s6/msgs/21503.phtml

I had that in my B4, ended up being a leaky heater matrix in the dashboard. You can normally smell that though with the heater on.

Recess at the top is the where the radiator siphons back to the tank.

If you're losing water then it's a leak or its your head gasket. Pull the plugs and look for a rusty Brown colour or get the car on a ramp when running a look for leaks.

Unless you've over filled your system, it's unlikely to have anything to do with the cap.

Get a sniff test done to rule out head gasket, or head issues.

I had a golf that lost this amount through a leaky cap so don't rule it out. Radiator return line spigot also fails and leaks but you would be able to see it

Cheers guys, as usual it could be a whole host of problems. fingers crossed it isnt the head. It is booked in in a fortnight (my mechanic is stupid busy right now) so will not use it till then. Will just leave the battery on trickle charge and see what the damage is. Will update and let you know when I know more.

THanks Rikki, lets hope I end up needing it ha ha. In fairness, the car has been an absolute gem so far. I have been waiting for a problem for long enough considering the amount of fun it gives me.

And the prize goes to TheCrispynoodle for his suggestion about the radiator return line spigot. I had checked the pipes around the area and could not see anything untoward initially. The clip was tight as a nuns ***** and it did not seem to be leaking when I checked. Today however, I let it get up to temp and could see small bubbles and fluid dripping out slightly from the rad return pipe. Let everything cool down, gave it a wiggle and the whole lot came off in my hand. It looks like the side of the header tank has cracked around the spigot, which has come clean off and is still firmly clipped in the rubber pipe. A rough cracked hole remains in the side of the header tank.

So, it will go in on Tuesday to have a new header tank I presume and have new coolant added and bled through etc. Great news, so happy it isnt the head. Should soon be rocking and rolling again.

Last question, I know Rikki offered me one but not sure it would get here in time for Tuesday. Are new header tanks still available from motor factors or shall I hunt for one myself. Cost is not an issue as such, I just want it sorted asap. I also recall someone recently mentioning a fleabay seller who was doing them for less than 20quid. I have a working cap, so just the header tank itself needed.

                            Cheers guys.
