    MAF question

I've got "hesitation" issues with my car and I'm leaning towards the coils or the MAF, but I seem to remember reading somewhere that when you go WOT the ECU doesn't use the MAF readings anymore and reverts to a WOT map, thus rendering the MAF redundant, if so this probably means my MAF's ok as it only happens at the top end on WOT,
can anyone clarify this or am I barking up the wrong tree.

When I had a hesitation with my car, if I was at half open throttle or so, it wouldn't hesitate..if I gave it more it would start to misfire. Changed coils, problem solved!

Yes, I'm now leaning more towards the coils as the more boost you run the harder the spark has to work, but there's no way of testing them (that I know) apart from swopping them out,
I'm now on the lookout for a spare set of coils

Not true. They can be tested (to see which one(s) is/are the weakest link):

Don't think that is true of the MAF. It is true of the O2 sensor.

Thank you once again, you are the oracle of the S2 forum,
so it still could be my MAF ?

Sure it *could* be your MAF, right up to the point that you remove it, clean it, check the pins, check the resistances, etc. and reinstall it. Once you've done that and you still have issues, you can potentially move on to other things, including a weak coil.

FIXED, finaly I've found the source of my "hesitation"
After some good advice, I bought a coil tester, £15 of ebay, and tested all the coils,it's the one that you can wind open the gap untill the spark breaks down, 4 of them gave a good strong spark jumping just over 20mm, but one only about 10mm, I changed this for a good used one and Bingo,
Car runs fantastic now, she's pulling strong and hard all the way to the red line now as it should,
BUT, its now throwing up error code 00561 all the time
This could be a few things but, hey ho, at least I've solved the hesitation.

Do you have the same coils as the ones on RS2? If so could you take a picture of the tester used? I can't see what could be used when the coil is placed onto the spark plug.

Hope some of the links I provided (re: missing and hesitation) helped.

                            As for the 00561:

•2413 (Blink Fault Code), 00561 VAG1551/2 Fault Code Number
                            Mixture Adjustment,
Adaptation limit exceeded, Adaptation limit not reached, Leakage in exhaust system before 3 Way catalytic converters, Incorrect signal for Mass Air Flow Sensor, Spark plugs, ignition coil(s), or Ignition Coil Power output stage malfunctioning
Symptom: Rich mixture, increased fuel consumption

Did you clear the code by pulling the ECU's constant power fuse, i.e. No. 27 in the fuse box, for say 5 minutes?

Yes the links were great, thanks
I've got a hand held code reader that I cleared them with, unfortunately my vag com and cheap ebay lead dont get on with my laptop anymore, so I'm unable to see any measuring blocks to diagnose properly.
