    034 GT3071r kit

    Hi guys,

i have been supplied w GT3071r turbo and tuning kit from 034 with the recent purchase of my S2 from the previous owner.

Ive also been considering the wagner reverse intake and intercooler from 034 along with the RS2 high flow wagner exhaust mani.

What experience has anyone had with this kit either with or without the reverse manifold??

can anybody recommend whether its worth considering rewiring for a different /larger MAF over the stock one? if so what would you suggest?

Also has anyone done or needed to upgrade the coils to more reliable ones? if so what?

the car already has a 044 pump and 3 inch exhaust. Anything else i should consider before going ahead with installing this kit?
maybe a larger external wastegate? yes/no?

    id love your thoughts...

You're thinking along the right lines. Loads of people use the Wagner kit and all are satisfied with it. Only issue with the reverse I'm.can be bonnet clearance.

You don't need a different wg and your MAF will be fine on the 034 chip. Upgrading it means a custom remap, which may be a little problematic in Australia...

Coil conversions are also very common and require a map tweak.

Don't forget the breather system in all of this too.

I had the same kit on my old coupe. You'll need bigger injectors. I made 428hp out of it on a set that were slightly larger than RS2 but still too small for the turbo - there was a little more to give. That was using an RS2 EM and IC. Stock wastegate.

You may find the exhaust needs altering - the downpipe moves slightly and as such the flexi pipe wouln't take up the difference on mine, I had to get a new one made up. You'll want to research the issues others had fitting aftermarket parts if you go with the Wagner kit too - not usually as straight forward as you'd hope.

The Wagner EM + IC are certainly going to give you some improvements as they are both restrictions on power but not necessary. Perhaps 10hp combined at the top end. The reverse intake is going to make it more responsive, I've not felt the need to go that route but plenty of others have posted their experiences.

You can use stock MAF, most do, it's just not mapped as accurately as it's out of range at 400+. The only alternative (other than changing engine management) is PRJ's RS4 MAF conversion but as far as I'm aware needs to be fitted and custom mapped.

ok so ive narrowed down to the wagner intake and intercooler and also the wagner exhaust manifold.
the wastegate will remain stock for now.
Im going to simply run the standard airbox with additional holes cut in and feed some cooler air with a duct.
Im running a catch can inline with the standard breather PCV which seems to be doing the trick.
        Anything im missing??

But what i didnt ask is about lightened flywheel and clutches?? what are people running and are happy in using?
This car isnt a daily driver just a weekend warrior. I want a lighter flywheel (but not super light with constant chatter) just an inbetween for faster rev up.
Currently i have the standard clutch and flywheel which handles the rs2 setup. I dont abuse my car with launches or anything but i drive hard between the gears

also the gt3071r im using has the 0.63 housing...

has anyone found surging to be a big problem?? any way to try and eliminate it if it becomes an issue??
what about long term disadvantages of surging?

It will surge on higher gears if you map it for boost to come as early as possible. You either delay boost which is not good as you end up with more lag, or you not go WOT on higher gears from 2000rpm to avoid it.

Surge will reduce the life of your turbo in the long run.

Flywheel is a difficult one. As stock you'll have a dual mass flywheel, which is heavy but it also forms part of the balance of the engine. You can fit the flywheel off a 3B, which is about 2/3 the weight and single mass but it's not properly balanced for an ABY. I did this and got away with it but it's sub optimal for balancing, although performance is better. You have 3 budget options - stick with the DM FW and get lighter wheels, fit a 3B FW and cross your fingers or try and get the 3B FW matched to your existing DM FW... The correct way to do it is to rebuild the engine and have the whole internal assembly balanced - this is what I'm doing now with a lightened 7A FW.

Clutch wise, Sachs, Southbend and Spec all make what you're after.

Running a catch tank inline nay not be necessarily ideal unless you use wider hoses for everything, or the catch tank has similar hoses to the original ones.

I was using a generic off the shelf tank like that taking the 2 lines one from the block and one head into the tank and then venting either to atmosphere or bck to the turbo and it didn't really work.

Eventually I went with the dual tank/seperator idea which seems to be ok

If it's the 034 kit with ecu chipset, you need to ditch the chipset and get it mapped properly as that chipset sucks

034 chipset is running extremely RICH.You need to tweak a lot on the fuel.

Sorry to hijack your thread, but I was thinking about the same Combo (gt3071R + 034 chipset).

What a/r ratio would you recommend for this turbo for normal daily use ?
Is 034 chipset that bad ? .. because I dont know anybody in a circle of 300km around my place, who can chip the car properly...

I have used the Wagner short intake kit with the same 034 kit and the car performed well.

I did have a custom tune on an additional ECU for Avgas and that as you can imagine made the drivability better as wel as improved acceleration. We don't have Optimax here in SA.
