I might have asked this before but a quick search came up dry.
Looks like the AEL 2.5 L diesel was set up with an cyclonic oil separator complete with drain back to the sump. Anybody run this or have photos of the system on an AEL?
There are at least two versions of this. One is fitted to the earlier 100tdi and a revised version on the later A6tdi both C4 models. The earlier one has just the connections shown, the air in/out and the drain back to a banjo on the sump. The later A6 version has an additional connection which is linked to the intercooler and appears to contain some sort of valve or flap. I am guessing this is to evacuate the oil collected under boost as they would be liitle point in trying to suck it back into the intercooler under vacumn!
It does seem to be used on at least another high end German marque as the cut away pic below shows! Not sure its much of a restriction as the air just swirls round. The PCV valve itself would be more restrictive as it has an internal restrictor.
Below should be a schematic of the later version. As you can see its connected to the intercooler and you can just make out some sort of mechanism, perhaps a float, in Item 5. The Tdi uses a complicated pcv system which is incorporated within the cam cover!
Perhaps it is opened under vacumn and shut under boost after all. Otherwise you would get pressure into the sump.
