Larger intercooler in a 20v urQuattro - is it worth it?

    Evening all,

I've been a member here for ages and have read countless project threads but you've all covered everything so damn comprehensively I've never felt the need to ask anything - until now.

My RR is having a bank-breaking restoration and I've been pondering fitting a different intercooler. I'm fitting an aluminium radiator and removing the auxiliary rad, so that leaves a neat area behind the grille for an intercooler in a nice high-pressure zone and unaffected by hot tarmac temperatures. From what I've seen this is a fairly common position for modified Type 85s, but I'm having doubts based on the following:

    1. I'm keeping the standard 'round the back of the engine' inlet manifold, so the extra piping up to the grille and back may adversely affect response times.
    2. I only have 250bhp or so (it's a very mild Nothelle 2.5 engine), so would I see much of a gain in anything but the hottest weather?

So my question is: is it worth the trouble? Would I be better off making a thicker intercooler to fit in the standard position? Or should I just leave it as standard?

Any thoughts or experiences greatly appreciated.

Have you found a bigger intercooler that will fit in the gap, I found it was still too thin even with the aux rad removed. There was more room in the stock position when I looked at upsizing. This is why some people with a urq have gone twin intercooler set up when going for a front mount.

See if you can log your temperatures first, it will give you a guide as to if its worth touching for the 250bhp that you run.

      Welcome to the forum..

why nog break the bank a bit further and go for the reverse inlet (sq style of wagner)?

I have fitted both an alloy 4 row radiator and a larger intercooler to my RR urquattro.I removed the aux radiator and used that space to fit a 13 row Mocal oil cooler. The new intercooler is 80% larger by volume and fits in the standard position. Its hangs lower than the standard intercooler so it was not possible to refit the bottom cover, and it partially obscured the original oil cooler and caused higher than acceptable oil temps on the track. The original oil cooler was directed cold air through the vent in the bottom cover and without it,it did not get enough. The Mocal oil cooler cured the oil temp problem.

            Thanks chaps.

I've half considered the reverse inlet manifold but, for the time being at least, I'll stay with the standard one.

I had plans to relocate and upsize the oil cooler anyway, as I'm convinced the standard one is too small, so putting that behind the grille and making a larger intercooler may work well.

Jsws3, I'm certainly interested in that. If you could post a picture of it that would be very helpful.

Do you have the core dimensions of the side mount, I may be interested.

How are you managing to squeeze a big front mount it, have you gone for the rally style extended grill mod?

Pace did use to make them for Keith .

I contacted Ross at pace last year and they wanted £465 + vat for the intercooler.
