Stuttering and hesitation at large throttle openings

    Hi all,

I'm new to this forum, and new to the Audi fold. I've just purchased a beautiful 1996 S6.

I picked it up last night, with a near-empty tank, and immediately filled it with Sunoco 94 octane. I usually prefer Shell Optimax, but I was out in the country with not much selection.

On the long drive home to Toronto, I noticed that, at medium-to-high revs and 80% or more throttle, the engine stumbles and hesitates. It feels like the fuel flow is being cut suddenly, then it comes back in, followed by more of the same until I let up on the throttle. It happens only after the boost has had a couple of seconds to build. It's very worrisome.

What's going on here? I didn't notice this on the test drive, and I thought I'd put the car through its paces pretty good. The problem seems to only happen in higher gears, but I figure that's because only the higher gears allow me to put my foot down for more than a second. The lower gears are FAST. I will try later to make this happen in lower gears, but in any case I don't think what gear I'm in has anything to do with it. I'm just saying that I only notice the problem in 4th or 5th when opening the throttle for more than two seconds.

I definitely don't hear any pinging, but maybe what's happening is the anti-knock sensor cutting the fuel flow before the pinging starts. Could that be it? With 94 octane fuel? And, if so, what to do about it?

The car is a bit hotted-up with an ECU upgrade, but the drivetrain, engine and turbo are OEM, and the car's well cared for with a full service history. The seller, whom I trust, did not mention this when I asked him about known problems with the car. But maybe he just doesn't put his foot down.

What could be going on here? I'm really concerned and want to get this fixed. I'm considering dropping in a bottle of octane boost just to confirm or rule out fuel as the problem.

    Any suggestions? Many thanks.

    Signed,

New guy who's a bit pissed his car's not working quite right.

Sorry, please explain. What are you sayin'?

Oh, let me add that I'm in Canada. We may have different names for our fuels, but the brand name fuels (e.g. Optimax) are the same worldwide, I believe.

I just found this 'out there':

That's correct. In the U.S. our fuels are rated at RON+MON/2. In Canada it's just RON. So a 94 Octane fuel in Canada is closer to a 91/93 octane fuel in the U.S.

      If that helps.

      Thanks.

I think he means that the fuel is not really up to the job of powering a chipped turbo engine. I am no expert, but you may have the knock sensor cutting in my using WOT in a high gear under heavy load. I would definitely take it easy until you have some 98 ron Optimax or equivalent in it and you can cure the problem. Does your "new chip" have any protection built in? If the boost has been wound up and there are no protection circuits i would take it even easier. Other thing could be a boost leak.

        Good luck.

Most upgraded ECUs that I know of prefer 98 RON. My nearest Optimax station is 15 miles away, but worth driving to.

Many thanks for that. I look forward to hearing from those 'knowledgeable guys'

98 octane fuel, huh? Who sells that? Don't think I've ever seen it at the pump.

This page says that, in Canada, Shell Optimax is 91 octane:

87 RON? Is that right? Do people put that **** in their cars? Is that why most vehicles across the pond have such huge engines that produce only a few HP?

There must be another explanation. I'm sure good fuel is available here. I just have to figure out what's best for my car, I guess. My car is certainly not the highest-strung vehicle in my town, so the right fuel must be out there.

American cars have huge displacement and (relatively) low power because they use technology from the bronze age.

LOL It sounds like they use fuel from the bronze age too!
There must be some good stuff somewhere out there.

I'm sure most people on reading this thread are gonna say that this has all the tell-tale signs of a boost leak/overboost protection with the subsequent fuel pump cut-off, do a search on boost leak within the forum...

Thanks. I did do a bit of a search, but everything seemed either irrelevant or over my head.

Maybe it helps to say this: 1) I don't hear anything unusual when this happens, so if there's some sound associated with a boost leak, I don't hear it. 2) The car is FAST AS HELL, so I would think that points away from a boost leak.

How would I diagnose such a boost leak? I realize some of this info might be in the fourms already, but I'm so new to this stuff that I'm having trouble making heads or tails. How could I confirm or rule out the boost leak you mention?

If you don't have a boost leak now, you probably will at some point. There were some test kits floating around somewhere.

Ask the maker of the ECU upgrade what fuel it is designed to be run on. In this country Optimax is 98 RON and most upgraded ECU's are designed to be run on this.

Just run it almost dry and fill it right up with the correct fuel for your chip.

It sounds as if your knock sensors are working at least. Best take it steady untill you get some better fuel, I reckon.

                              I would say boost leak.

When you get knock and the knock sensors pick it up (they might not) it holds back rather than cuts out violently.

If it is chipped/mapped I would not drive it WOT with low octane fuel as a lot of chips do not have the knock sensors enabled!
