    another no start

So. Stopped for fuel and won't start. I have a fuel pump and regulator on the way so these will be swapped over this week.

Question is - if it was a dead fuel pump / fuel related surely there should be enough pressure still left in the rail even for a couple of seconds?

All fuses, etc ok and fuel relay closes on cranking.

Guess I'll be ordering a cam sensor next, and a tow rope!
(Tried the water trick but no luck)

    Loosing patience with this thing.

You should be able to manually activate the relay with the cover off to hear if the pump still activates. I replaced my fuel pump last week end, was quite straight forward...lifting the carpet and steel cover plate was the hardest bit. Job took about an hour all in

no alarm that im aware of.

closing the relay manually with ignition on = nothing.

Luckily the new Pump and Pressure Regulator arrived in work this morning, so will change those later.

I would do just the pump first. closing the relay with ignition on should produce a squirty noise along the fuel rail, sounds like you have a dead pump.

            Fuel Pump replacement info

Looks like you are on your way to getting it sorted. That said, I am always amazed/perplexed that people are surprised and get mad at their car when the fuel pump dies. "How dare it die! How inconvenient this is!! I hate you (the car)!".

While some folks get incredible miles/kms out of their fuel pumps, the fuel pump is a wear item and is best replaced on a pre-emptive/proactive basis BEFORE it fails. Some folks will say that "that is crazy, it's a waste of money, etc". Not really when you include the cost of flat bedding your now dead UrS (S2, UrS4/S6, RS2) home or to a friendly shop. For years on the C4 UrS forums I have recommended replacing the fuel pump every 100K miles. That is a lot of miles and even if the fuel pump is still working, as you have found out, they give very little or no warning that they are going to fail.

Mine was like that before I clued in. It died after I parked it for a public opening house that I was leading. Of course, I didn't know this until 10:30 at night. Not convenient. In the AM, I had to get flat bedded 40 km to the nearest Audi dealer where they proceded to spend 5 hours figuring out the issue (at least that is what they charged me). The bill was over $800 plus a massive amount of grief for me. Europeanme (Mike) will know this - it failed in Sooke on Vancouver Island and the dealer was in Victoria. I can't believe it but they didn't have an 091G in stock so I had to get a bus and ferry home to Vancouver, wait the weekend and then return on the Tuesday to retrieve the car. And then they didn't give me back all the fuel they removed from the tank to do the job. That was the last time my UrS4 was in a dealership.

A C4 fuel pump replacement that will have some hints for a B3/B4:

            Good luck. Rant off.

Looking at the history/receipts that came with it and can see no mention of fuel pump replacement. Guess it did well to get to 160k miles.

Update: new fuel pump still in its box. Bus to work tomorrow so went for a pint to consider life in general......seems life is better than it was 12hrs ago.

                Update / Resolved.

Double checked for fuel flow by manually closing the relay = nothing.

Installed new pump then tried again = lovely fuel noises from the rail!

                Fired up straight away.

Also did the coilpack swap at the same time. Bright Red in the engine bay is of course worth 20hp!

                  New record.......

Only two months on new fuel pump (ECP) and it seems to have expired!

no start issue (well it started ok, then coughed then died!).
Turning ignition on and manually closing the fuel relay = nothing, no fuel noises in the rail at all.

All other sensors (cam/crank) are new and relay closes on cranking, can't believe a new pump would fail after such a short time.

Will investigate tommorow, can these things "Jam/lock"? Read a few threads where a decent tap gets brings them back to life. Possible dirt etc?

What about the relay itself - even if it closes on cranking could it be at fault?

Any thoughts / input welcome. (Yes, fuel in the tank...but not much!)
