    smoking on idle

HI guys some help needed plz

I just had a full engine rebuild on my 3b s2.Fitted new valve guides, replaced new valve stem oil seals, head gasket,Honed cylinders new rings (12bar)when compression tested new seals and oil pump. Turbo reconditioned, so got her up and running no probs to start with going and running nice. Now when it idles at working temp smoke billows from exhaust has a really strong smell of fuel not oil (would cut the eyes out of you) pulled a few fault codes today 00533,00516and 00513 with some research found 00533 idle speed regulation adaption surpassed intermittent, 00516 (F60)TPS 30-00 open or short to positive and 0513 engine speed sensor (g28) no signal.A guy who rebuilt my engine says the smoke was turbo seals but to me it smells not of oil but fuel .Also running sweet idling but starts to hunt up and down between 1000rpm and 1500rpm the car pulls great under load no smoke at all im running one of pauls hot switchable home fries chip .K&n cone filter and a forge dump valve sounds good but should i be running these aftermarket add ons .If anyone could help on any of these maters plz get in contact .

    Thanks Derek

Would the engine not be burning off the oils and liquids that were used to clean things up and ther various things when all that work was done? I know things burn off in the first few hundred or so miles after major work like that.

If it's nipping your eyes then like you say fuel.........lot's of unburnt fuel.....could be confirmed with an (MOT) emissions test, would show up as high readings of HC.
Sorry not familiar with the S2 engine though.

        First things first!
If the codes were pulled without the engine running then you can ignore the 00513!
So that leaves two codes. Certaintly the idle switch one needs looking at as thats what the ecu uses to sense that the car is at idle. If you have a multimeter, peel back the rubber boot from the idle switch connector and probe between contacts 4 and 6 (1 is the top). With the throttle shut you should have a closed circuit. If not the TPS needs adjustment or you have something preventing closure of the throttle. Check to see it against the stop.
It may well be that the other code is because the idle switch is not shut so start with that first!

              smoking at idle

Carried out a few tests tonight with a good mate the results are TPS is 0 ohms closed and then goes to infinity ohms very slightly open can also hear the micro switch click.

also tested the idle speed stabilization and at normal operating temp 90 degrees gave reading of 8.5 ohms .

lamba senser at input to lamba 14.8 volts .

mine bellowed a bit following a rebuild then a bit of fast road stuff up to silverstone for an ELMS race. stationary on the M40 it was kicking out smoke and i was wondered WTF, oil was right on the top of the dipstick and I think flooring it a few times had flooded the PCV....it cleared and has never returned and the engine is sweet as a nut since.

Would the lambda issue cause the other 2 faults to show ?

Would have thought it would have a code for the Lambda. Just seem a high voltage but its the ouput rather than the input that would control the fueling. Are you getting that voltage at the battery with the engine runing?
These cycling events seem to connected to the carbon control solenoid which is related to the lambda as the ecu sort of blends the fumes from the tank back into the engine. This is cycled.
Do you actually have Vagcom? Looking at the measuring blocks would tell you more.
Other than that its a matter of methodically checking the potential causes outlined in that manual. Don't forget that just because the idle switch checks out it doesen't mean the ecu sees it as it could be a wiring break.

If the engine has been apart/removed you may have mistakenly swopped over some of the hose off the PCV system which gives all sort of issues. Worth double checking! Photos help as its easier to see sometimes!

                            See post 10 down!

What colour is the smoke? I very much doubt its purely fuel related, more likely you are burning oil and its running slightly rich, hence the smell of unburnt fuel.
Have you had a look at the plugs for any tell-tale signs?
