    Rear Main Seal

Engine is out at the moment, removed the flywheel at the weekend to get it sorted and found this:

Been looking at replacement parts from Audi but have heard bad things about the new casing/seal that they are now doing. Think I have managed to trace the seal down to the part no: 068103051G and was looking at this one:

Shop 40,000+ spare parts in stock now for classic Volkswagen, Porsche & Land Rover from the biggest brands. Free delivery on orders over £75.

Does anyone know of a good supplier in the UK who might have a decent seal? Really don't want this one to leak when it gets put back together... Heard lots of stories about new seals / casings leaking shortly after replacement...

    Any advice appreciated
    Cheers

Was about to say ask JP, don't do what I did and pay £75 for the whole lot of Audi because they don't supply the S2 seal on it's own. You have to buy the ally housing too

Going to replace the seal and keep the original housing in mine. Just got the VR part yesterday, looks good quality. The new Audi part does not look good.

any tips for replacement? so many stories of new seals leaking

                  1. Use a good quality seal.
                  2. Make sure you drive it into the housing dead straight.
                  3. Make sure it runs on a fresh area of the crank, not in the groove worn by the old one.
                  4. Make sure you lubricate it and the crank tail boss really well when you install it, so the seal does not run dry when you start it up - the seal lip burns out in seconds if not.

Thank you for the advice. Fitted the seal the other day.

Made sure that the seal was totally flush with the housing and used plenty of assembly lube on the crank and seal. New seal was slightly offset to avoid the groove, hard to believe the seal can cause a groove so deep.

Also used RTV on all other mounting surfaces and the rear gasket. Looks untidy but mainly just RTV. Really hope this one does not leak, guess the only way to test is to put it all back together and hope for the best!

Should be starting her up with fresh oil in about a month or so, hopefully this assembly oil will last that long!
