    OE Coilpack Wiring

Just having a think about a new loom for the OE coil packs. The wire that was used from teh factory wasn't up to the environment that it works in... so what would be required to work properly and without the issue of the insulation cracking and shorting? How would be best to attach the OE coil packs to a new loom? Some sort of insulated bullet or blade connector with a staggered connection?

Could you not do something similar to the way that Alex makes the loom conversion with it allw rapped in that heat shrink stuff with connectors of some kind on the ends going to each coil? That way when you needed to replace one, you could 'unplug' it, get the new one and splice in a plug to the coil and then you could plug the new coil into the existing loom? Alot easier and tidier and hopefully longer lasting?

As it's all enclosed, you'd need to have wire designed for the temps. The issue is the space for a connection under the cover, as there is not a connector on the OE coil.

Why not just go new loom/TFSI coils? im sure they (TFSI coilpack) are 1/3 of the price of an O.E coil?

Because I would re-use my OE coils for free...

oh ok, I assumed your original coils were at fault..

              Not this time

I rebuilt the coil pack wiring 2 years ago when I went RS2 spec and had a misfire. The coils still work, so just thinking aloud...

rebuilt O.E coilpack, that must have took some perseverance!

Surely the heat proof wrap that Alex uses could work as a 'sleeve' to wrap the wires in to protect them from the heat? Plus it looks OEM. As far as plugs go, couldnt you put little terminals on the ends of the OEM coils instead so you would lose the hassle of having to splice new ones into a loom? Plug and play style?

20 years reliable service from the OE harness is pretty good I think. The OE harness was not a cheap item for VAG - they used a type of silicon coated fibreglass sleeving which is the same type of stuff as I use on my looms - the best money can buy, short of Nomex lined sleeving which is the preserve of F1 & military budgets and it only marginally outperforms fibreglass sleeving, its just lighter.

From what I've seen of the OE harnesses the wiring goes brittle where it's not protected; the exposed bits of wiring need sleeving to enhance the longevity but in reality nothing lasts forever. Anything made of rubber or plastic that is not adequately protected will be damaged by that kind of sustained heat.

Alex.....the voice of reason, as always.

My original coils lasted for 190k miles before I got my first hiccup. I can't complain. I've bought 5 new ones and be replacing them and the wiring soon so looking forward as to what Andy comes up with.

id say stock coils are ok too. just needed a bit more charge for more boost to stop any hesitation.

Re did mine with five new coils and new sleeves for wiring, just to add, my wiring was cracked and brittle inside sleeves of all coils.... As you say , 20 odd years of heat not too bad, 4 of mine were original I think.
