Plugs, injectors, WGFV - last hope before coil packs

Stage 1 million of my mystery boost problem.
This afternoon’s task (when I get home are as follows)

A: Change the spark plugs – can someone please offer me a guide on how to do this. It's slightly different than normal!
B: Check \ clean the injectors.. Is that possible? Or am I being a muppet? What tools will I need.

If that little lot does not work then I will be changing the WGFV today as well.

Is there anything I need to know before I start all this. Don’t want to get myself in any trouble.

This, should hopefully see the end of my problem, if not it can surely only be the coil packs.

    Thanks in advance.

(p.s) Big thanks to Sal and Jamil for your help and advice yesterday..

    Jon

          OK
IIRC, remove the two screws that hold the damper in place on the top of the throttle body, (you may get away without removing the throttle body!)then undo the allen head bolts on the coil pack cover. Carefully lift out the coil packs and lay them to the back of the engine. These are under tension from the rubber seals over the spark plugs so it's a bit fiddly. Then using a long bar and the correct sized plug spanner, remove spark plugs!!
Once all are replaced, do the reverse, BUT.. ensure that you do not trap the coil pack wires in the rear of the cover (BTDT) and then you have to apply pressure on plate until you have front and rear bolts in far enough to hold, then u can easily insert the others until they start to hold too. Replace the damper bracket and recheck to ensure you haven't squashed the coil pack wires at the back, before tightening up the cover.
          HTH.

There's nothing about the coil packs in on the site I was directed to

IS there a difference between the 3b and ABY?

Eh? you never asked to be sent to a site regarding coil packs you asked for a guide on changing spark plugs which is on the link posted!

Mikes car is an ABY, not a 3B. Run through shows the ABY engine, though I'm not sure why it doesn't mention the coilpack removal I'm sure it used to,,,,,I know he is in the process of overhauling the site, so maybe that's why,,,,,,,follow Karls quide,,,,,using the pics on Mike's site as reference to the ABY engine if you need to.

Jon - Why are you so obsessed with coil packs ?

Please tell us all what you have tested and/or replaced already - there are many many simple checks required before blaming coil packs.

I'm not saying coil packs (or amps) don't fail - its just less likely than a leak or a sensor problem of some sort.

Have you done simple mechanical stuff like verifying cylinder compression is OK and that the timing marks are correctly set. Do not take anything for granted - especially on a car you have just bought.

Does the throttle plate move ALL the way open on WOT ? Don't laugh - I've seen that one S2 before - very easy to miss the basics sometimes when you fool yourself into thinking that it must be a complicated electrical fault or something wrong with the Motronic ECU...

OK, Here is what I have done.

I have swapped out the MAF and that was defiantly not the problem.
I have pressure tested the engine up to 13 psi using one of Lee’s kits (this held for over 5 minutes)
Searched the engine high and low for any kind of cracks or hissing.
I took a very long hall to Birmingham yesterday and met up with Sal_s2 and a few others.. they seemed to think it could have been coil packs and I get the opinion they know what there talking about (considering they have about 3 S2’s in pieces and it seems there forte)
I am changing the spark plugs today (something I should of done to start with!)

I don’t remember mentioning CP's in this thread apart from how to get around them when fitting the plugs and why the site directed to although concerning ABY, didn’t have anything relating to the removal of coil packs as stipulated KarlBlueS2 in order to gain access to the S Plugs .

I have not done any of the things you have mentioned but I am VERY happy to try. I am NOT a mechanical person, but I am enjoying what I am learning and I am at least giving it a try.

If someone can tell me how to verify cylinder compression, and that the timing marks are set correctly then I will do it tonight. But I have NO.. idea what that involves.

                          Thanks,

                          Jonathan.
