    blow through MAF setups.

was looking at my engine bay today and i realized it would be very nice if i could run the MAF in line in the charge piping instead of in the intake pipe. have any of you guys ever attempted or experimented with this idea?

I think Marc S. at EFI Express has tuned AAN's that way. Call him.

I think JP on here was running his like that but now MAFless and DJones also runs on pressure side I guess the hardest bit would be clamping it enough. You can machine a pipe to fit it but it has to be very accurately sized to work properly

          1. It won't last there as it will get contaminated with oil.
          2. Even if you remove your breather and the turbo is not leaking anything, at low-load the figures are all over the place.

Possible you won't feel it much (engine lives on O2 feedback), but there are timing oscillations still there. Not ideal at all. Don't recommend it.

i dont forsee any problems with doing it after some research and reading in forums. i was thinking back to my nissan/SR20DET days and i actually did a blow through Z32 MAF on my S13 silvia and it worked no problem. all i had to do was recsale the ECU for larger MAF which i'd of had to do weather it was draw through or blow through anyhow. i dont know how i forgot that lol.

i dont think there will be any problems with oil contamination, my breather system is all routed to a catch can and my turbo is a fresh rebuild so it better not seep any oil. as long as i use a oil-less air filter i know there will not be an issue now. so oil problem on MAF wire solved and with the help of my brother and his machining skills the silicone popping off the MAF housing problem is solved. as for driveability everyone who has been doing this really hasnt had any problems with the MAF crapping out as far as i've read.

im having my brother machine me a flange like below and im going to weld it to a 3in pipe. also i will bead roll the ends so it cant pop off.

You think it runs perfectly, but in fact you have not seen any logs of what goes on with your timing and fuelling.

Kinda the same like measuring horsepower with a butt dyno.

Well I don't own any of that equipment. My AEM wideband doesn't lie though and the air/fuel ratios are spot on.

Yeah, at WOT they are, until the MAF gets contaminated. Once it does, WOT is off as well.
What happens at partial throttle is pretty cr*p though. Especially the yo-yo ignition angles.

                    But what do I know...

Well my car drives fine and I'm not buying a tune for something so minor. What you know does me no good anyhow, I'm not on your level with the ECU obviously.

There's nothing to tune, when the primary load signal to the ECU is all over the place.
When the MAF can not be fitted to the suction side or if there is not a big enough MAF available for the setup, I just run without one.

I would listen to what Dmitri is telling you
Long term reliability is the issue not whether it runs OK after a week.
IMHO if it was such a good idea OEMs would do it more often - they do know what they are doing, most of the time

Well I have no option but to run with one and it doesn't fit before the turbo so this is the simplest and most cost effective solution for me. People on motor geek.com have been running cars like this for years without any problems. So it must not be that big of a deal. I mean even if the MAF does get dirty it's no big deal to pull it off and clean it.

If there is one thing I learned, then it is pointless arguing against arguments like "my mate also does it", "everyone else does it" and so on.

Once I get another blow-through MAF car, I'll get some logs off of it, to show exactly what I mean.

That said - it's your car, and you can run it any way you like, I am just pointing out that this is not ideal.
