    7A/3B FW Locking tool...home-brewed

    Lads

After a seed of doubt was planted whether or not the crank bolt had the required amount of torque from the machine shop who, incidentally, removed the keyway , I had to make this as removing the starter motor and everything else surrounding it would have been more of a major PITA...

That a pretty nifty looking solution to the problem in hand. Nice one.

I thought that the front pulley must be held by its own correct locking tool to prevent stressing the keyway whilst tightening the pulley bolt??

Correct, that's why the Audi locking tool works like it does.

me 3 so not to put the huge torque through the static crank? think i used an old wheel bearing case with a large slot down the side of it for mine, then a bar welded across the front (with room for a socket to access the bolt head).
Im pretty sure the bearing case was from the front of my S2 as it happens and, also about the right size for plugging the maf pipe for pressure testing

I made something the same up using a saxo fly wheel tool welded to some box section.

My pulley no longer has a slot for a OEM tool. Via the flywheel is the only way for me

My first tool was like that. But not lasted to much.Dangerous too. When it broked parts of it almost hit me.Now a not hardened steel part is doying the job.
Nice tool you have there. Will the crank be subjected to torsion that will damage it if locked from the other end?

mines a piece of a heavy duty axl stand welded to a flat steel piece with cut out for the pulley cut out.

                    works well.
