Newbie question: What's an "MAF" and should I clean it?

This post describes the exact same stuttering problem I'm having with my '96 S6, and identifies the MAF as the culprit, which cleaning seemed to solve:

    Should I clean the MAF?

    How would I do that?

Boost leak test kit is on order.

    Thanks!

Cleaning the MAF is a good idea! You need to remove it and soak it in IPA - Isopropyl Alcohol not Indian Pale Ale

Where can you get this IPA in the UK? And I suppose I should ask the obvious question - where is the MAF? Is it in the Box thing on the left hand side of the car as I look at the engine (and to think I used to work at a VW/AUDI garage....)

        Cheers

Don't know where to find isopropyl alcohol in the UK, you can get it at just about any grocery or drug store here in the states.

MAF is Mass AirFlow sensor. Should be located in airbox top where turbo inlet hose connects. It'll have a ~6 pin connector on it.

          HTH!

Yeah, some people have said spray with brake cleaner, some say spray with alcohol, and others say soak.

                Which is best, d'ya think?

What, if any, are the dangers of harming the MAF here, just so I know.

If anyone could provide a picture of where the MAF is, or how to remove it, that would be AWESOME.

                Thanks for all the help.

The best way to get IPA is to send your wife to your local chemists and let her order it , it comes in 0.5l botles.Thats what I did np.
