    Alloy Or Steel Sump

I have a choice of sumps for the new alloy engine block when it is built , i will be running a wet sump as standard. i can use the s2 alloy sump 5.5kg, a s4 alloy sump [est 5.3kg ,no side wing ], a volvo tdi/audi alloy sump 4.8kg , or a passat steel sump which i havnt weighed yet [est 3kg] my main question is will the steel sump be as stiff as the alloy , bearing in mind i dont want the alloy block to twist , the alloy sumps seem to be strong. i am not concerned about damage from rocks ,as we have a good sump guard. the only reson i would fit steel sump is to save more weight but only if no negative side effects

Steel should be more resistant to a good whack.

steel will take a wack. having said that i have seen a golf 4 engine seize after sump hit floor. tore a hole in the corner.

may need to install baffles in the steel sump. also does a windage tray fit that sump.
