hall sensor swap ABY - advice

    Just a quickie....

Need to change my hall sensor (ABY) and think I know what to do after much reading.

However, just wondering if I follow the guide @

    A) Aux rad - does it need to come out on the S2

    B) How delicate is the woodruff key on the pulley?
Any tips to lock it in place - I have no "special" tools
    .
    C) Any other usefull tips before I break something!

    Many thanks people.

I followed that guide when I did mine a long time ago and all went well. I just undid the mounts for the aux rad and moved it to one side without draining the coolant.

However, after doing mine I like others read the posts on here with dire warnings about breaking the woodruf key if you don't lock the camshaft with the proper tool. Woodruf keys are brittle so it's entirely possible that not using the proper locking tool could break the key as the torque load passes through the key if you do it without the locking tool but I don't know if anyone has actually broken the camshaft key when not using the locking tool.

Using the locking tool means a lot more work as you'll have to remove the cam cover and you'll need a new £30 gasket. With the cam cover off and the cam cover exposed you may well be able to find a way to lock the cam without the proper tool.

Interestingly, when you lock the crankshaft with the official tool, things are the other way round and you are potentially putting the load through the key. I suppose it depends where the reaction is between the pulley and the diamond washer. Someone on here will know.

Mine was fine having done it without the tool and still is.

    John

Easiest way is to remove the cam cover & counter-hold the exhaust cam with a pair of mole grips
The cam cover gasket is reusable if it's in good condition

That is the best guide out there. However it was written for the C4 UrS4/S6 and needs some adaptation for the 3B, ABY and ADU.

One thing note: When you are playing with your cams or cam sprocket, use a proper tool to hold the cam sprocket when you remove the bolt in the center of the sprocket. DO NOT jamb a big screwdriver through one of the big holes to hold the sprocket. This can damage (bend) the shutter wheel, causing strange running and intermittent engine stopping issues until the cam sprocket was pulled to reveal this bend:

Exactly what I just did! Luckily got away with it. Decided to loosen the bolt first whilst everything was still together. Was not tight at all really.

Biggest hassle was removal of Aux Rad bolts. Limited access and fat fingers! It wont be going back in.

Now just go to wait for Bulgarian Mail (ebay special) to deliver my seven pound sensor before I put it back together.

                  This....
                  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161034699368

Took a week to be delivered but they gave a tracking number.
Funny that I could track it from a Bulgarian local post office all the way to Heathrow and then it disappeared. Royal mail useless but it showed up on some Russian tracking website!

Think it finally worked out at approx £7 for sensor and £10 postage.
                  Money well spent I reckon.
