The way it was explained to me is as follows: You are flat out on boost (lets say 2 bar), if you don't have a dv you would only lose a small bit of this boost while changing gears. The turbo would stall (but make that glorious Quattro noise). When you get back on the throttle after changing gears, you would still have relatively high boost but the turbo needs to spin up again. I guess if you lost boost at more or less the same rate as the turbo spun up again, everything would be great!

I think I will try this to see if it works, but it could be expensive if it doesn't!

I would have thought also, that high pressure build up will put a lot more stress on the plumbing, ie the hoses, throttle body and also on the turbo itself...

Personally for the sake of some funky noise, i'd rather save a few hundred and stick a DV in

I don't know how anyone who claims to have any turbo knowledge can claim that no DV will improve track times.

The S1 had an old variant of the DV, which involved dumping the air when the throttle was released into the exhaust manifold, to keep the turbo spinning.

IMHO it's a no-go. I know of someone who has tried this with 2 Bar on a truck K27 and who has bent the impeller on the compressor wheel, as well as the shaft. Ouch and big $$$ to fix it!!!!

But you do whatever you like and whatever you think is right. IMHO you'll only get more lag but oh well..

I know about the PMs, but all that happened in a very stressful period and I just couldn't do anything about it.

Could someone tell this thicko where he can find the DV? My car makes the "quattro" noise on gear-change, a lot louder now since the airbox came out.

After reading this, I'm a trifle concerned...

I asked this question ages ago re DV, a lot of the big power cossie lads don't use the DV, as stated quicker spool up after gear change. One of the tuning mags did a feature on this and they found that spool up after a gear change was quicker not using the DV. There was some concern re the reliability of the turbo stalling putting extra strain on the shaft, but no one has reported any probs re this.

here you go 1 DV, this is under your air box, well just about

Thicko? Bibby i hope you are referring to the guy who suggested that I run without a DV I in fact run a Forge DV006 as it bigger than the DVR or 007P and I was told the 006 is able to get enough air out not to stall my turbo.

                  @Bibby - oops! Misunderstanding

I am sure you have one! What you are hearing is excess air dumped by the dv into the MAF Turbo hose making a noise through your cone filter - the normal filter box muffles that sound somewhat.

According the S1 how mihnea said It was called anti lag maybe! Take a look closer on the S1 Exhaust manifold! You will see some pipes going to the runners!

@Mihnea any comments on the turbos? (TA34/TO4E 57 trim hybrid , K26/27/29 8er and KKK VTG)!!!

It was an ancient form of anti-lag, but also of a bypass valve, as the purpose of the valve is to keep the turbo spinning... that's exactly the purpose of that valve on the S1.

Turbonetics compresser housing with a 0.70 AR
T04E Super 46 Trim compressor wheel
                            Stage 3 T3 turbine wheel
                            KKK K26 # 26 turbine housing with 0.63 AR
                            Single ceramic ball bearing
Turbonetics thick shaft (apparently very robust)

He tells me he recommended the 46 trim over the 50 trim as I need quick spool up and only 420 hp. We also have to take into account that we are at an altitude of 5000 feet (standard barometric pressure of only 850 mBar) and that means that turbos spool in on average 500 rpm later than at sea level. This implies that one would probably chosse different turbos up here than one would at sea level. His philosophy is that one has to give up hp at this altitude if you want decent spool up. He is quite happy that we change to a 50 trim later but suggest I try this setup first. Oh also he said the fact that I use water injection needs to be taken into account when choosing a turbo.

Also, he believes that the turbo with the thick shaft and roller bearing is strong enough to run without a diverter valve. I know that is what the rally Quattro's did. He can't however give me a guarantee that the tubo won't break if i do that but I will probably give it go for a few laps!

Any comments? All this turbo stuff has me pretty confused ....

Take out your plugs and see if the electrodes are all there. Is the compressor wheel OK?

Better to remove your cats too if you have them fitted. The bots are now there and they will break the ceramic stuff rather rapidly!
