    94' 80 2.6 quattro blue-ish smoke

    Evening all

Today purchased a 94 2.6 quattro 80 saloon, tax and test till next year. Only payed peanuts for the car so took the gamble. Exhaust was hanging off so got it back and put it back together. The car has service history up to the minute and has been mechanically well maintaned. Only done 140k miles etc. However .. took it for a decent spin up the road and as soon as i put my foot down and got moving i was suprised with how responsive she was, pulls really strong, really smooth, sounds great etc. However ... looked in the rear view mirror and i couldnt see anything behind me apart from plooms and plooms of bluey smoke. The car started to fill up with fumes inside so i returned home and shut it off. the car is fine when free revving ie* not under load. but as soon as you hold the revs when under load hse is puffing and puffing smoke out the back. Just wanted to hear everyones opinions before i decide on the future. it only owes me £200 and is in fairly decent condition overall so i dont know what to do next. Are we thinking rings ? valve seals ? the previous owner has said " it has a slow engine oil leak and that he has to top it up every few months" .. most of it is being burnt out the back.

    Any ideas ?

Is it definitely using engine oil?

One of my ABC engined cabbies started throwing shed loads of blue smoke out the back under heavy load, after checking I found the o ring on the big cross headed plug on the power steering pump had failed and was spraying p/s fluid onto the v in between the cylinder heads and under heavy load the oil ran back and dropped onto the exhaust hence the shed loads of smoke.

Aldo check if the oil leak the last owner mentioned was from the head gaskets or the v plate gasket in between the cylinder heads, both are known to fail and if it's pooling and running onto the exhaust you will leave a smoke trail like HMS Ark Royal...

Worth a look before you rip it out or scrap the car.

        Hi Andy

Thanks for the reply, I was hoping there may be a few little oddities like that, my plan is to take it on another run Wednesday, see what it's like again. I'll then drop out the oil and put something thicker than foxes piddle in it with a new filter and go from there. I will definately check out the o-ring on the p/s unit. And will see how much oil she uses mileage wise. I just don't want to get pulled for polluting the airways by the rozzers. I just can't get over how well the car drives. By far the most solid one I've driven. It's been out into garages all it's life, and recently had all four corners of suspension replaced with brand new shocks and lowered springs. If I get chance I'll get some pictures for you guys

Thanks for the help people, it's waaaaaayyyy to solid to scrap !
