Hi,
have recently bought my S2 and there is a engine rattle at 1500 rpm, sounds like its coming from the cam cover area. Any one any idea's? I've had the cam cover off and there's no obvious signs.
On mine it was the power steering pump that was past its sell by date that was rattling! best way to check this is to take the PS belt off and run the engine. If the rattle goes with the belt off, you have your source.
Other than that PS belts can rub and rattle the cam belt cover at the bottom of the cover.
Try these two first and see how it goes Chris

I'll try those, although i know my power steering pump is making a small tapping noise.Just renewed my cam belt and fitted new alternator and power steering belt.Dont think its the bottom cover. It sounds more like a dodgy tappet or something.Cheers for the advice Martyn.
No Problemo!!
If you cannot pinpoint it, come along to the S2 meet at castle Coombe and have the 'Collective' cast their beady ears over her. Good luck

If your S2 is a 3B it could be the infamous dizzy rattle. Sounds like a resonating fixing goes away at higher revs?
No idea how to fix it.
It is a common problem which has no apparent effect on anything and it may be a case of learning to live with it.
Cheers for the advice,i'll have another poke about and see what i can come up with.Supposed to be booked into Audi for a check next monday.I'll see what they say and let you all know.
It could be a bit of lifter rattle. Check your oil level and type, it could be due to old or poor oil in your motor. I'd recommend Castrol 10-60 synthetic, like a number of other 2S owners on this forum. A decent oil tends to reduce any unwanted rattles to the minimum. The other likely candidate is the cam chain.
Yeah same as the others, cam chain and if its a 3b then possible dizzy rattle. I fitted a new genuine dizzy to mine with a metal gear and it still makes a rattling noise. But then it may be the cam chain. Dont know and i dont care It still kicks ***.

I checked the cam chain and it seemed ok,not to worry.i'm changing the oil and filter soon anyway so i'll whack some 10-60 in and see what happens.Cheers steve.
Not got it done yet,i've been away for the last 3 weeks. Ordering a reconditioned steering pump next week. Gave it a service with some decent oil but it hasn't gone away. Not really too bothered about it cause the cars so much fun.
We've come to the conclusion in the U.S. based 20 valve list that the rattle is caused by a slightly loose timing belt.
This sends a resonance through the valve train and into the "dizzy".
Several of us experimented until we figured this out.
No immediatel danger, just not easy to fix until next TB.

Yeah its definately the dizzy thats rattling, the timing belt was a bit loose when i renewed it but was tightened up propererly when it went back on.Might just renew the dizzy and see what happens. It needs settin back up as the ignition timing is slightly out anyway, the dizzy was taken off for inspection last week. Cheers for the help.
