    Volvo K24 7400 Generic remap

    Hello all,

I've been a bit distracted from rebuilding my 3B over the last year or so what with having out first child, buying an E39 M5 and then swapping some other toys for a C5 RS6.

However, it's my mission to get the old girl back on the road before the summer and as such have accumulated a few bits and pieces over the last 6 months to upgrade from the normal homefry route.

Now, as per the thread title i have acquired a low miles volvo k24 7400 turbo for this upgrade and just wondering if anyone can supply a generic chipset yet?

Also, have many other UK members gone down this route that can chime in with experiences?

As much as i'm loving V8's, the old 5 pot has a special place in my heart!!! he he.

    Cheers guys

Talk to PRJ on here, i'm sure he could do something for you quite easily, he has had his hands on those turbos and is a very reputable tuner.

Hi, i'm pretty sure i read some time ago that he wouldn't be creating a chip for the 3B crew. Things could have changed since then of course, i'll wait to see if he responds.

I've not read much about these turbos being used on S2's over this neck of the woods and quite excited to see what the difference will be over a homefry. I'm not into chasing big top end figures so low lag and a torquey bottom to midrange is what i'm looking for. Hoping the volvo turbo fits the bill. I can only find one clip on youtube to get and idea off what they're like and it's not even a good one. Arrrrgh!!!

Or upgrade from 3B wiring to ABY with single coils etc - easy enough if you know what yer at. Then add an ABY ecu !

Well hello Mr Nugent, long time no speak!! Hope your keeping well.

Whats the crack with changing the loom anyway, is it a carpet out jobbie or does the loom have a break in it somewhere convenient?

Are there chips available for the ABY?

            Cheers

I would hardly call it convenient - but you don't need to take out the carpet - the engine loom is fully connectorised.

Meant to add that I don't have a generic setup for that turbo but it would be based around generic rs2 setup. You would need the right injectors and fuel regulator. I did one for someone a while back.

So far i have only purchased the turbo and bosch 440cc injectors which the Volvo V70r also uses. Next on the list is a fuel pump and decent exhaust manifold but funds are not the greatest at the moment so taking time to gather all the bits and pieces. So i also need an uprated fuel pressure regulator, which one would you suggest?

What kind of power do you reckon you were making using this set up? Whats your opinion on this turbo being mapped?

You should get the 4bar regulator from 7A engine. I seem to recall the one I did before felt pretty rapid but when it hit the dyno was only around 340bhp. I didn't map it to the limit - it had AAN fuel pump and I cannot remember the exact turbo variant or whether RS2 EM was fitted. It is a good turbo though - no significant lag and built boost nicely.

Loom swap is dash out, loom comes through the firewall under the battery box, ecu and then along to the fusebox.

You can do a pin swap, and run the extra wires for the coils, Paul did an Excel sheet for it.

Porkkis is the only supplier I have found for a generic 3B tune for a k24 7400. He has one for a k24 7400 and 440s on a stock 3B, about 320bhp he quoted iirc (using a machined hotside rather than a k26/6). No other mods.

PRJ did an AAN, as did Paul.

I think this is the one you mapped Paul?

                      The boost profile is:
1.7 bar from 2500 to 5500 rpm, after which it tapers off to 1.3 bar at redline.
The turbo can not do more than 1.7 bar at 5500 rpm and then 1.3 bar at 7000 rpm (98% N75 duty cycle with 1.9 bar spring) and IAT's start to go up.

So it is not as strong as a RS2 turbo - that can do 1.45-1.5 bar at 7000 rpm, but it also has no lag at all. Instant 1.7 bar all the time with a 3000 rpm power band.
It makes about 540nm and 350 bhp.
Could somebody take an 3B RS2 chipset and pull the boost down to match the above? Or is that just daft?

Sounds like a job for porkkis then - lot less hassle on 3B route for the requested application versus loom swaps, pin grafts etc

Maybe 3bar sensor if Porkkis goes over 1.5bar on that generic map which I expect he does.

I think it's time to contact porkkis to see if he has made any further developments with this turbo and upgraded exhaust manifold, exhaust, fuel pump /regulator etc…..
