    Starter relay position C4 V6

    Hello!

Where is the starter relay located on a 1992 100 2.8 V6? I'm having some problems with the starter not working when the weather gets cold and I thought I'd try and jump the relay to see what happens...

Pictures and any other input on why the starter might give up when cold is most welcome!

    Thanks in advance!

Are you certain it has a starter relay as it's something only fitted in certain territories with certain security options. Would need more info to check C4 diagrams etc.

No I'm not certain... The relay bit was just something that showed up on google when i searched for any solutions. I'd like to try and jump the starter directly to see if it is working or not but its location means that it's almost impossible to reach without shorting the wires to the rest of the car. I've already changed the ignition switch and everything works perfectly when the car is warm so i really don't know where to look next.

        It's a manual 5-speed. Engine code AAH

Although I'm rusty on the 100, the A6 (very similar) starter relay was beneath the steering column fascia panel. If you can get a few of your finger tips onto the relay block and keep "switching to start" position you should narrow the relay down quite easily. On my last A6 (manual) there was a brass jumper connector between two pins on the relay plate where the starter inhibitor relay would live if it were an automatic. You can jump the starter at this point to bypass switch and relay issues.
Does the vehicle have any aftermarket alarm which could be giving you bad connections to the starter circuit?

Thats the thing - look at fusebox and see if it has the big brass jumper... if not then it must have starter relay (which can be bypassed with a jumper) and then you will know if cold weather starting problem is in the relay or the started itself - such as a sticky solenoid for example.

C4 S4 starter 50. wire goes through back up lights relay.
Also with disconnected central electronics vacuum pump under rear seat was no go for starter.

After checking some wiring diagrams I can confirm that the starter wire goes from the ignition switch to the back-up light relay (#4 in C/E panel) and from there to the solenoid, as Val said. The relay worked fine and jumping it made no difference...

I did have a friend turning the key whilst I was listening for any noise under the hood and all I could hear was a faint clicking from the solenoid so I guess that is the culprit.
