    rebuildt AAN timingbelt problem

    Hello!
Yesterday when i installed my timingbelt on to my rebuild AAN engine i ran in to a bit of a problem.. The timingbelt crawls towards the head/valvecover and almost makes contact. All parts are new crankgear and camgear are Tommi's billet. I thought that i hade some paint behind the tensioner and that was the problem so i cleaned the surface that sits against the block. But with no differens. So therfore i turn to you guys/girls, anyone other than me who had this problem? Here are some pics of my issue.

You need the diamond spacer washer behind the bottom pulley. My AAN needed it too.

Ok, but why is that? Is it because of the camgear? It was all correct before i took it apart and then there was no diamond spacer/washer.

It's so easily missed in the strip down, can stick to the crank or pulley and fall off later resulting in you thinking it wasn't there.

Mine was the same I also use the same cam sprocket as you but it was just the same with the old one fitted.

          But

Is the washer really mounted from the factory on AAN engines?

I'm not sure my ETKA is not up and running, but you need one.

The only other cause is that you have forgot to fit your thrust washers and the crank has moved backwards, I doubt that's the case, you can check your crank end float easy enough anyway.

              Ok

The thrustwashers are in place. Found out here http://www.motorgeek.com/viewtopic.php?t=32113
My AAN is from a -95 S6 so probably i have the short one and need that f*cking washer, and i thought my battle with the crankbolt was over...

Lol, once you start upgrading your fettling forever... I had to sweep my gearbox out the road once....

It's all good practice for the next time you have to dig into her...

It's because of the vibration damper. The crank snout never changed but the crankdampers did have a change. The 251J needs a washer

My -93 UrS have the washer. I couldn't even instal the dampper without it. The damber made contact with the cover plate that's behind it and have the crank timing dot. s0_big seems to not have this cover installed.

For my ghetto build I bought another dampper and it was a older version. This fitts without the washer, no problem.

yep diamond coated washer is a must when using aan damper. They're easily missed on stripdown. It's also important to renew if the coating has worn of as the coating is what gives the friction to stop the front damper spinning once torqued up not the tiny little locating key on the timing belt pulley.

Also renew that front crank bolt now that it has been torqued up.

I'd see that as something to be proud of, making enough torque to destroy an 016 box!

To be exact there is two different AAN dampers, the other one with the washer and other without washer. Just as urs4boy showed in his post.

You were right. I found the washer in one of my boxes.. But now i'm wondering, why did Audi this change on the pulley? Is it some kind of improvement for something? I mean with the washer between pulley and crankshaft why?
