    Volvo K24 - 7400 Turbo Kit for ABY / AAN ?

As a chipped RS2 set up on an ABY is a very good tried 'n tested I5 20vt upgrade, and can be done by most home mechanics, as it is pretty much plug and play, with no fabrication skills required, and I'm thinking that because RS2 turbos are thin on the ground, an enterprising person or company, VRS ?, would make a nice profit in sourcing the various bits needed for a bolt on kit using a Volvo K24 7400 turbo to allow a person with the same level of skill referred to above to buy and fit one of these complete kits to their ABY / AAN ?

I'd buy two kits to be honest for two of my four cars. :roll eyes:

As I understand it this K24 7400 turbo is more freely available and cheaper than an RS2 turbo, and when a K24 7400 turbo is altered and fitted with an accompanying kit of the required parts would provide a great and easy upgrade to an ABY / AAN ?

I'm thinking the turbo would be reconditioned and maybe upgraded with a better intake wheel, all the various pipework, hoses and clamps, injectors, and the installation of the chip in one's own ECU when sent to say VRS, and whatever else might be necessary, so that every little item is in the kit ?

Have I missed something or am maybe not living in the real world ? I know there are newer and bigger turbos, but this particular turbo seems like a nice sensible level, and reasonably achievable for home mechanic skill level I5 owners.

As I say, it seems like a good idea to me ?

Any comments on this idea either way most welcome.

    Thanks.

Has anyone dyno'd the same car on that turbo with and without RS2 exhaust manifold to get a feel for how restrictive the stock ABY/AAN EM is on that application ?

Main problem with the idea is that its not just a matter of 'installing a chip' on the ECU - it has to be done by someone who can fit an uprated MAP sensor and change a surface mount resistor for the MAF circuit. The chip itself would need to be suitably generic as well - probably assuming ABY/AAN camshafts as well - which may not be the best way to extract the max but it could still be good 'bang for the buck' value I suppose.

Like all these kind of things - it depends how many folk are interested to to see if any suppliers would be vaguely interested.

              Definately!!!!!

As S2 central says though some skills needed but got to be worth the hassle with results that far outstrip anything else up to 350 bhp and even more apparantley. Ruffiano in the US knows people who have used this turbo with a billet wheel for quote "very very impressive numbers"

I can turn a spanner, but not so good with the research! I would be interested in having a go if anyone could help come up with the info on what's needed and not just a load of techno speak!

Your the last few words made me These guys do put up and start fantastic threads, but they are talking amoungst themsleves a lot on here, and it seams they are mostly all in the trade or have been.I struggle with quite a lot, turbos, electrics but it does make for fascinating reading. We must be patient and try and learn.I guess apologise for our ignorance and just ask away.

                        Hi Paul,

Selflessly, my car has an Wagner RS2 manifold already fitted, and the fitting of same is a good idea for anyone who can afford one, even if their other mods are comparatively limited and therefore don't take full advantage of the Wagner. I know Dimitri always tends to advise not to spend money on such items that aren't really necessary / essential.

The thing about the Wagner exhaust manifold, and to a lesser extent their bigger intercooler and front inlet manifold is that they can be fitted at home with a regular DIY level of tools /ability. Welding and fabrication is beyond my knowledge / equipment.

My apologies for my assumption regarding the comment re changing the chip as the full extent of what is necessary to chip an S2's ECU. I assumed it would need the other two elements that you mentioned as part of the chipping of an ECU.

I had yourself and or Dimitri in mind for the ECU part of the kit.

I was under the impression that the Volvo sourced 7400 had an internal wastegate and needed a K26 turbine housing which themselves are quite hard to come by these days? Or can you use a K24 housing?

I agree with PRJs comments though - there will be no commercial incentive for a business to produce a "kit" as volume will be far too low and cobbling together used parts that a customer would then expect warranty on is never going to be appealing anyway.

Shouldn't be too hard to put together a list of parts though. If the S2 exhaust manifold can be used without being too much of a bottle neck that will save expense & headaches. Off-the-shelf injectors combined with a larger intercooler & relayed fuel pump and map to suit would be a nice little upgrade to around 340-350hp

This. However i do think there is a future with the 07k TT-RS RS3 engines. But the old 20vts... sadly there is no real money to be made. We are all way to cheap to spend the money.

Looks like I should just buy an RS2 turbo, or ideally a hybrid RS2 turbo from VRS or Iroz, and bolt it up with suitable 'chip' of the ECU and leave it at that.
