Gearbox, diff & transfer box recommendations HERE >

Getting the right oil for gearboxes, diffs and transfer boxes can be tricky, so please ask here if there is any information that you need.

To help us to give the most accurate advice possible we do need some information about your car. e.g.
    Make:
    Model:
    Year:
    Manual/Auto:
    Performance Modifications:
Driving style: (road / off-road / track etc.)
Any other information that may be relevant: e.g. approx BHP if modified, any transmission problems
What recommendation are you looking for? Gearbox, diffs, limited slip diffs, transfer boxes etc

Any oil we recommend is available to buy from us (if you would like to) for delivery throughout the UK and many destinations Worldwide. We offer a really extensive range of oils and lubricants from 11 major oil manufacturers at prices much lower than the high street and main dealers. We stock oils and fluids that meet pretty much all manufacturers and international specifications. Our brands include, Silkolene, Fuchs, Gulf, Castrol, Motul, Mobil, Millers Oils, Shell, Valvoline, Amsoil and Red Line.

Plus, as the Club is a member of our club discount scheme you can get discounts of at least 10% across our entire range.

To redeem your 10% club discount simply use the following club discount code at the checkout.

    S2F

Once the code is added at the checkout you will then receive your extra 10% club discount. However this discount code cannot be used in conjunction with other offer codes, BUT the code can be used in conjunction with any of our offers on this page HERE that do not require offer codes.

Any questions please ask here or contact us via email at sales@opiepoils.co.uk

Finally, if there are any products we don't stock and you have difficulty getting hold of elsewhere, let us know and we'll see if we can stock them.

We look forward to being of help!

    Cheers

what would you recommend for my S2 (ABY):
    - gearbox & center diff (6 speed)
    - rear Torsen diff
Car is slightly tuned (~300HP) use is mainly road with the occasional trackday (no racing)

    and for my A4q (my 97 B5, 2.8 30V engine)
    - gearbox and central diff
    - rear diff
Normal B road use, no autobahn

I need to fill my box up at some point.

It's an allroad 01E, standard open diff at front and torsen centre.

Car is modified, turbo v8 between 6-700 hp.

      Road and occasional track use.

        Hi

You need a 75w-90 for both gearboxes and both diffs.

The UK's largest independent supplier of automotive oils, fluid and parts. We've products to suit any vehicle, from full blown Race / Track weapons, to Daily Drivers looking to save money. Plus FREE expert advice & recommendations - OPIE KNOW OILS

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Redline MT90 and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearboxes. The Castrol Universal, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives. The Fuchs Syn 5, Motul Gear 300LS, Millers CRX NT LS, Gulf Competition LS and Redline GL5 are ideal for the S2 diff. The Fuchs Syn 5, Millers CRX, Redline 75w-90 GL5, Motul Gear 300 and Gulf Competition are ideal for the A4 diff. The Fuchs Sintopoid, Castrol Syntrax Longlife, Millers TRX, Motul Motylgear, Mobil SHC and Amsoil FGR are also good choices.

Sorry, but we can't supply the Haldex fluid.

        Cheers

Thanks for that. I deal with too many cars to remember all the engine/gearbox/model codes.

If standard, I would have said 75w-80, but as it's had a lot of modifications, a good 75w-90 is more sensible.

                  btw: the A4 is in northern Finland, winter temps down to -30°C are normal (last week -42°C). Would that change your recommendation? {S2 is in Holland}

                    Hi

As it's getting that cold, it's difficult to suggest something that is going to be ideal, other than not going out when it's that cold. Apart from that, An ATF might be a good option for the winter as it's thinner than other gear oils. The best options are the Amsoil ATF, Red Line D4 or Fuchs ATF6000, although the others are fine as cheaper alternatives.

I don't know how warm it gets in the summer there, but you might need to change to a 75w-80 or 75w-90 for the warmer months.

                    Cheers

don't think it is feasable to change every season

summer temps are about the same as in the UK, only with less rain

                        Hi

I know what you mean, it would be a pain to change the gear oil a couple of times a year. Perhaps as a compromise, go for a 75w-80 all year round.

The Red Line MTL, Amsoil MTF or Fuchs Sintofluid are the best ones. The Millers EP 75w-80, Gulf Gear TX and Motul Motylgear are good cheaper alternatives.

                        Cheers

Q: some gear oils are "GL4", some "GL5"; what is the difference?

5 liters of Fuchs (should be enough for both the gearbox and the rear diff of the A4 afaik) in the basket, siringe/pump added (good tip!). and very decent shipping costs to Finland btw: can you supply new drain plugs? I heard that it could be better to have new ones available

                            Hi

Thanks for the order. Unfortunately, we can't sell drain plugs at the moment.

This gives an explanation of what the GL specs mean.

There is a bit of a myth that is very popular on the internet that GL5 oils eat brass synchros. That was true back in the 1970s, but the additive pack in GL5 oils was changed (by reputable companies, dodgy ones may still use older additives) so it is basically the same as GL4, but in a higher concentration, making it safe with brass.

                            Cheers

so for our cars with the Torsen LSD a GL5 would probably be the better choice

I'll go to the dealer for the plugs then.
