Tips on removing the starter on a 3b

    Hi Guys

i was wondering if anyone has some valuable tips on the best way to replace the starter.
i.e what you need to shift out the way, or what you can get away with not shifting etc.

Started of by removing air box, and got the front facing bolt from underneath ok, but it the on facing the drive shaft is proving to be a pain in the erse. Me drive shaft cover bolts are rusted in the middle so not taking a hex key. Does this have to be removed?

Tried coming in through the steering arm, and just about every other angle possible without removing exhaust etc.

Top tips and pointers would b much appreciated

    Cheeers

to be honest i couldnt tell ya but i do know that when i was under mine a couple of months ago the factory in built rust prevention system made it look a manky job.

maybe do the simple thing and get a minion to do it while you sit with a dram and bark orders? lol

The way i do it is remove the drivers side front wheel , then the plastic shield around the drive shaft and stick your hand/spanner in that way. Then use your other hand with a ratchet on the other end. Its one of those jobs you do by feel while trying not to drop the starter on your head.

Cheers guys, I think the minion approach sound promising ,,,, which brings me found to my next point.
Dave cone round Tommorrow I have a surprise for you, and if your lucky you may get your wheels back.

Aerously though, I did try through the wheel arch method, but me steering shaft was making it tricky, and surprise surprise the track rod thread with the Allen head at the top has rusted out.

              The joys of auld motors.

The way I would tackle it is, remove battery lead from battery.
Jack up the front drivers side of the car.
Remove under tray if there is one fitted.
Using a 13mm 1/4 drive socket, long extension and ratchet.
Remove the M8 nut retaining the battery lead to the starter terminal.
Reach up and pull of the spade terminal for the exciter/starter signal wire.
Then depending on year and head size of the bolts for the two bolts that retain the starter 16mm/18mm I think.
                Firstly for the bottom fixing
Use a socket and long extension from the front of the car and a spanner up between the subframe and driveshaft heatshield.
                Now remove the airbox, then
For the top bolt use a long spanner to get the bolt started then revert to a small spanner to remove it fully.
Access can be gained by reaching down between downpipe and the back of the block.
You may find it beneficial to lock the steering over a little to give a little more clearance.
