Eeeek - Possible turbo problem - Funny noise

Hmmm, I think I have a problem. Completely my fault for suggesting recently that it was running well ha ha.

Firstly, it feels every so slightly down on power, not much and the boost and pull under load is still consistent but it possibly feels slightly down on ooomph.

Turbo is a K26 Hybrid fitted by MTM about 35k miles ago as part of Stage 1 upgrade along with 303bhp chip, RS2 IC. It is always warmed up and down properly by me but I cannot comment on how it was treat before I got my hands on it (about 5k miles ago)

So, the noise starts about 2200rpm and is not really a whistle, more a quietish whirring noise. The turbo comes on proper boost around 3500rpm as usual and obviously when all hell breaks loose, it is a little harder to hear it as the rest of the engine is making plenty of noise at this point. I would say it becomes slightly louder as the the revs rise but not noticeably. I believe the rest of the engine is running as it should.

About 2 weeks ago I had the cambelt, roller, aux belts and water pump done, so I believe that might have involved maybe the IC hose being taken off and then put back on as everything went back together.

Annoyingly I am having the Aux rad and brakes done in a couple of weeks, so could do without anymore expense but if needs must.
Not sure how long turbos last but I would expect more than the mileage it has done but obviously dont know how it has been treated before me. I can say that I drive it pretty hard most of the time but I care for it properly and it has very healthy service intervals with new oil etc every 3k miles.

I will ask mechanic to have a look at it when it goes in in a couple of weeks but thought people on here might have an idea if they have heard similar noises before.

Not really much I can suggest, you could take the airbox and inlet pipe off the turbo and check visually and check the turbine float. Could try the Garret troubleshooting guide http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbob...ting_Guide.pdf

Yeah its a difficult one as I am no mechanic. I will ask the mechanic to have a look but from the noise (but like a quiet dentist drill) I suspect turbo bearing or something not spinning in the balanced way it should. Had a couple of suggestions for turbo reconditioning companies. Only trouble is can the mechanic house my car whilst the turbo is off, sent away and brought back to life. We shall see but I want it all sorted for summer.

A possible concern is OEM Bosch plugs being changed last service and I have read that bits of them can fall off into the engine and cause issues. I am hoping my turbo has not "eaten" anything
