    White smoke from under bonnet

After a short drive (15 minutes total running), i was just about to pull out of a junction 50 yards from my house. Then power steering goes and i get lots of white smoke from under bonnet.

Got it home, but the inside of the car began filling with smoke as well! Turned the car off as quick as i could. Opened bonnet, smoke seemed to be coming from turbo/wastegate area. A trail of some sort of liquid along the road behind.

Car seemed to be running as normal before this although i wasn't paying any attention to boost gauge. Engine/oil temps seemed normal though.

Will get a better look in next few days. Is this likely to be turbo? Headgasket? Maybe just a burst power steering pipe? Any pointers appreciated.

Got a chance to check the car in daylight. Looks to be just a burst power steering pipe. Fluid is spraying everywhere from it. Its the long one from pump to rear of engine area.

If anyone has this pipe without holes please let me know.

Ok, so unbolt it and take it to your local hydraulic specialist who will be able to make you a brand new one using your fittings for £30 - £50. It will be better than any spare one....

The one fitted is fairly new. However it is a custom braided replacement, which i'd have thought would be stronger than the original type.

Because it wasn't rubber coated it did make the power steering noisy, which i'd like to take the oppertunity to sort now. I still have the original hose already off the car (also with a hole in it), think i'll take that to a specialist and see what they can do.

Sorry to hear this friend, I was getting a lot of smoke coming from below my 2.6 cabrio but we seem to think that it was the seals in the pump and has been stripped and all parts replaced, but now very noisy and we think we put in wrong oil. Hope not too much mees under the motor coz that stuff gets everywhere!

The noise is not because of the rubber coating in the outside of the house. It is because the orginal has a sort of "smaller" diameter part in the inside, if I remember correctly. That´s why some aftermarket hoses dont work.

Yes that's right, the factory hose has a kind of internal baffle that eliminates noise, your best bet would to take the old hose to hydraulic specialist and get them to make you something up incorporating this.

I had one made up a few weeks ago using the existing ends of my current hose but with a new hose. I dont believe he used any kind of internal baffle and mine is silent as my girlfriend sleeping after a good dose of chloroform... (Obviously I am joking, but on a serious note that is the only way to get her to get into bed with me.... again im joking )

Quick update... i got a second hand original Audi hose from a forum member and i now have quiet power steering.

For anyone else changing this hose there are 2 washers at each end. Part numbers are:
                    N0138149 x2 at rack
                    N0138487 x2 at pump
