Hard launch tickled the crank pulley

So we all watch the videos, Audi's giving full rohrt of the line. Well I tried it, and it upset the crank pulley. I was laughing at the weight transfer all the way home untill I noticed it sounding very broken.

Pulling it apart reveals the ring which have the groves for the ribbed belt has separated from the pulley.

Ordered one 3a from the picture, the vibration damper is separate part on the AAN. Wouldn't mind replacing it while its apart, but looks to be a £400 part from VW.

Has anyone found anywhere in the UK that can rebuild them? Or do anyone make a pattern part? GSF said they don't do one if so.

They are separate parts, so what you describe sounds normal

Surely if the ring was a separate part, it would have a separate part number? Will grab a picture tomorrow.

The vibration damper and pulley rim are separate parts, BUT they are retained by 4 x M8 bolts so shouldn't be able to move independently. I would be very wary of any movement in that area, since the assembly also retains the crank sprocket (that drives the cam belt). I would not run the car until you have got to the bottom of the problem.

It soubds like the toothed crank pulley has fractured.

Alex, silly to ask but are you sure that the outer pulley is connected via the 4 bolts? Doesn't ting a bell from when I got disassembling but that was over 5 months ago

Yupe, separate but could be full of **** sticking them together. I can't see how they would come apart without a lot of force. Don't run engine at all. If crank pulley had sheered then I'd have thought it would have eaten itself by now. Any mechanical noise from around there is not good.

AAN damper with "the" washer is a solid one piece. AAN damper that don't need the washer seems to be in two parts.

The pulley and vibration damper rotate fine without unwanted movement, but it seems on part 3a, the part the aux belt goes round, IE the groves in the pulley is actually a ring that is pressed/spot welded onto the pulley not the vibration damper. You can put your finger on the groves and rattle the ring in and out and round a few mm in each direction. If the ring is spot welded onto part 3a then I've snapped the welds. Will grab some pictures in a bit.

Didn't realise there were 2 different types of pulley. Is the one with the washer an early or late part? Or updated?

Monkeymagic, its an AAN in a 96 S6.

AAN is different to ABY/ADU which in turn is different to 3B

Seems there are 2 different parts for the AAN alone as well?

let me know the part number for the damper. I may have the one you need.
