urS6 Auto - non starter - Starter Question

My urS6 saloon has been parked for at least six months. Put a fresh battery in it today, and went to start it, the starter just clicks like a machine gun.

It sounds like the solenoid pulsing very quickly.

Is there anything I can do to fix it in situ, as it is a load of grief to take it off, especially if it doesn't really need to be taken off ?

    Any assistance welcome.

    Thanks.

If you can get to it tap it with a hammer.

        Agree.

Clicking solenoid = not enough juice to fully engage the starter motor with the flywheel ring gear and actually spin the flywheel.

Even if there was enough juice to spin the flywheel, it has to be enough to reach 13 RPM (Paul Nugent) or 25 RPM (Audi lit.). before the ECU will fire the J17 fuel pump relay and allow other starting things to happen.

        Just sayin'

Yep, if the battery is OK I'd go with hitting it a rattle if you can get at it.

These cars dont like sitting not being used do they? Most of the problems I had with the S2 resulted from it sitting for a while. I try to run the S6 at least once a week now.

Agreed, while battery was fully charged, it is old, so will try a newer / better battery and post the results.

                  Thanks.

                      Update to close out.

With a good fresh decent battery, , the car started after a few seconds longer than normal, a send or two of a little bit of tappet noise at the top of the engine, until the oil pressure came up, and then idled and drove like it was parked yesterday.
