yes, top side, which is not important. bottom side can have maybe 1cm of insulation material, and I assume that the one on photo has it

Looks OE factory all right. Never seen a C4 rear seat with that though.

Hmm the underside of my seat has a layer of material covering the wire of the seat so the terminals cant touch any metal. It was on it when I got it.

The solution is cutting the thin metal bar of the seat where it could get in contact with +.
Anything on the + will make you get the seat out 3 times when you work there thinking:"did the blanket mooved?is it still in place?"

Because I have been on C4 Audi forums since 1998 and have made note of several such fires. In each case that I read about/saw, an incorrect (too tall) battery had been installed. Yes, that *might* not have been the cause in this case, but I would bet that it was.

This is why you don't bolt down the seat. You can easily pull it out and ditch it.

Also had this with my typ44 100TQ MC2. Had the car for more than a year and went for a trip with 4 people on board for the first time. After only 200m the passengers in the back asked what that smell was and shortly after we saw smoke coming from under the rear seat. I was very lucky to have taken off the rear bench one week before to install a remote control central locking, and I had been lazy enough to leave out the 2 bolts that hold the seat since I was going to isolate my soldering work a bit more in the next weeks. If the seat had been bolted down the car would have gone up in flames for sure.

Damage to the underside of the seat wasn't that bad luckily, but it was quite a shock

I always put an insulating blanket over the positive area ontop of the plastic cover as seen them wear through the cables too next to the cover. Happens even with the correct height battery if someone heavy sits on the seat as it flex's and bends down.

NO worries, notwithstanding my comments, thank you for posting the thread and sharing your knowledge, as I have two urS6 C4s, with no battery covers.

Currently both cars are resting, and so I've dodged a bullet so far, will be putting the covers on when they go back into service.

    Thanks again.
