    ABY Injector fitment

Got my injectors back from cleaning & testing - ultrasonically cleaned and new caps, seals etc fitted. I fitted them into the fuel rail with a smear of oil on the seals and then fitted the fuel rail onto the inlet manifold. all seemed fine but then I noticed that I can move the injectors up and down about 5mm, and twist them side to side really easily
So I took them off and checked against the bag of old bits that had come back with them from cleaning, and sure enough the new seals, spacers etc seem the correct size. Inlet manifold and fuel rail (both ABY, along with the injectors) don't appear to have been modified..... so WTF is going on? Surely they're not supposed to be this loose?

Try backing out the inlet manifold inserts until they fit snug.

I don't think the inserts will be air tight if you back them up. In stock AAN rail the injectors also have quite a lot of play.

seem to remember my 3b ones moved about when they were refurbed possibly due to needing to lube the seals to get them seated in the rail and IM but no issues. I did p*ss fuel on starting the car but that was from the banjo at the end of the rail not being nipped up correctly

Not good practice to use oil on rubber seals...ever. As long as the inject is snug in fuel rail and clip in place, fuel should not leak. Fit in inlet side must be good enough to stop any air being sucked past injector on closed throttle.

Interested to know the results if you notice a marked difference and where you got them done how much etc

Cool, thanks guys. So by the sound of it they might be normal, my clips are away being zinc plated so not fitted them yet but obviously they won't take up that much slack!

Rikki they were done by Injectortune - IIRC it was £67.50 inc return post. They were already in pretty good condition by the sound of the report, only down a few CCs here and there but the spray pattern wasn't very good. The guy said they all returned to "as new" performance.

I think the clips slide into a grove in the injector, providing whatever locking is needed.

                    Yup, they do
I was just surprised they were so loose in the vertical plane without the clips, didn't seem like they'd hold 3bar fuel and 2bar air pressure respectively

This sounds normal to me. The o rings seal just fine, as long as they're new and not damaged

I'm sure I can twist my injectors around ( 7A though not ABY ) but deffo no up and down movement when the rail is bolted down .

Not sure I remember now if it was Injectortune that did a set for me a while back, but I think I asked for Viton seals ( I think he told me that he used Nitrile as standard ) as they are fuel/oil resistant and cope better with heat ( especially if you use Kalrez o-rings instead but they are expensive ) ...I resisted temptation to use silicone grease though some will say its OK if its only a tiny smear, engine oil is fine AFAIK

Will @ VRS did my RS2s for about the same money; was trying to stop my lumpy idle but I found the cause elsewhere
