    034 Motorsport Throttle cam fitted

Recently reported a failed throttle cam on the S2. Danny @ DNA sorted me out with an 034 Motorsport Billet cam which arrived last week or so.

Finally fitted it today and have to say it is a quality piece which is so easy to fit, even I managed it ha ha. Got the battery charged up and took it for a blast. Still got this funny whining noise that increases from 2500rpm onwards. My mate thought it might be gearbox related but I am convinced it is turbo related as it feels down on power slightly. it is deffo not a whistling noise more a cross between quiet dentist drill and a whine. Play in turbo shaft? Dunno but need it looking at.

Anyhow, here is a pic of shiny new throttle cam.

Good work! As for that whining noise, does it do it on idle (When revved and your engine bay is up)

Idle sounds fine. It is from around 2500rpm onwards that you hear it. Boost kicks in properly around 3500rpm, so at 2500rpm I assume the turbo is starting to pick up speed and it could be this. I've listened to belts, alternator and put ear close to every part I can manage but nothing seems obvious. There is no smoke out of the exhaust, oil pressure and temps are spot on. Bit strange really but I am sure it will either get worse or show itself eventually. Did think it could be some type of boost leak but whilst it feels every so slightly down on power, the power is still very consistent. No boost cuts or anything like that. No whooshing noises. Bizarre

Maybe a pressure test just to rule out that there are no boost leaks?

Make a video or sound recording of it.

I don't have the bungs and compressors etc do a leak test. I live round the corner from MRC, so might pop round and see them.

Will see if I can get a sound record to post. To the untrained ear, it might not sound too bad. My mate had to listen quite hard for it but you know when something is wrong with your own car when you drive it without faults and then when suddenly it starts making some weird noises.

How much did you pay for the cam please?

              Cheers

Are you sitting comfortably Steve? It was approx £100 inc postage. As you cannot buy the cam on its own (the part is the entire throttle body) I was a little stuck but to be honest, it is a quality piece made out of billet and is beautifully made. It fits better than the original i reckon and is made in such a way that it does away with those natty little metal clips. The old cam had done well I guess but it is made of plastic and has to withstand a fair bit of heat where it is located. Once removed, you could see how much the old part had suffered.

Possibly a little cheaper due to currency from 034 direct but then you pay mega postage for a tiny part. Much of a muchness really but Danny at DNA was rapid with delivery etc. Tell him you heard about it via the forum and he will give you a bit of discount. If yours has snapped like mine and others have done, I reckon it is a no brainer but if its still working well, just leave it (unless you like shiny new pieces of metal in your engine bay)

Does it have anything to stop the cable coming out?

Its a clever design. Rather than just slotting in the bottom like the original does, it sluts in sideways via the cable and then from the bottom. Difficult to explain without taking a pic and I cannot do that now it is fitted but there is no way it is coming loose. Definitely better than the OEM piece I would say.

Hardest thing is getting the old metal bush into the new piece. Tight fit but does fit just right once lined up right. I didn't have a vice, just a big hammer

Fair, I don't have that kind of skill or time to hone a piece of metal into something like this but i am sure there are many ways around it for people in the know. I might be able to get a pic of the other side that will show you how the cable goes in. Will have a look next time it comes out the hutch.

Not sure exactly. It has a K26 Hybrid turbo, 303bhp MTM chip, Miltek turbo back exhaust, RS2 IC. Before this funny noise and a slight decrease in power it felt very quick. Difficult to say as I have never had it on a rolling road but guessing nearer 350bhp than 300bhp but that is a guess. It smashes B5 RS4's with ease along with many other fast cars. Would be nice if it could beat a GT2 but I think I need to spend a few thousand on the engine before that happens ha ha.
