1.9 Bar Waste gate spring experiences
I am running one of 034's 1.9 Bar springs on my RS2'd 93 UrS4 with Stage 3 MRC generic RS2 software (not a custom map). When I first installed it, I just removed the WG cap and swapped the springs, leaving the WG spring perch in the OE position. I felt an immediate improvement initial throttle tip-in snap. Really liked it. Drove with it for awhile, as is, and then I went to a group dyno day (rolling road) that I had arranged. My first set of runs was disappointing (well beat by a fellow with an RS2'd UrS6). I spoke with the dyno tech who had been in my car and he said it felt very jerky during acceleration. Hmmm.....Since I had tools and the OE WG spring in the car, I swapped the OE spring back in and paid for another set of runs (3 per test). Came out much better, only a few hp down on the Dahlback'd UrS6. Torque about the same or better. Harrumph. I liked the 1.9 spring.
So I drove with the OE spring for a few days but then decided to put the 1.9 Bar spring back in. Immediately the car felt more lively again. Then I nailed WOT in 2nd or 3rd somewhere and equally immediately felt a severe jerking, really bad. Okay, what to do?
Upon reflection, right or wrong, I decided that what was happening was the 1.9 Bar spring was resulting in a rate of boost rise that the ECU was not familiar with (exceeded the existing mapping). In response the ECU was freaking out and killing the boost via the WGFV. Then a millisecond or so later, it would see that everything was good and let the influence of the 1.9 Bar spring go again. BUT again, the boost rise rate was too fast and the ECU dumped boost via the WGFV. Again and again. Jerking jerking jerking. Couldn't live with that.
Solution: Since I had previously removed the cap that covers the WG spring adjustment Allen head bolt, I backed the perch all the way up. Tried the car again. No jerking on WOT but still some improvement in initial tip-in snap over the OE spring. Then I tightened the spring perch down, half a turn at at time until the jerking returned. Ok, hit the problem point. Backed the perch back up half a turn and voila, no issues with the jerking but plenty of initial tip-in snap. I haven't touched it since.
So, yes, maybe remapping could help but I managed to determine a compromise point that works for both me and the engine and ECU.

I didn't SET anything, I just found a point where there was no severe jerking on WOT. I haven't unplugged the WGFV (yet). I will soon and report back.RS2'd 93 UrS4 5 spd sedan

Sorry, I was assuming one would have to have the car remapped to take account to the spring. Still curious as I hope to soon need a 'new' chip for an RS2+ spec, so wanted to know what would the advantages of integrating the 1.90 spring into the new set up / spec.
Thanks for replies to date.Comment
