    G40 Code Confirmation

    Hi Guys

I would just like to confirm something before i go beasting the belly of the beast please.

Pulled a 00515 cam sensor failure code on my 3b.
The next line said 0040 mechanical failure.

Can someone confirm that, this means its the sensor within the dizzy? or do i check other avenues first.

checked timing and rotations of everything and all appear to be inline, also all the fuses appear to be in tact.

No other codes are coming up.

The G40 Hall sender (aka cam position sender) is *IN* the distributor of the 3B (as well as the very early AAN "tuna can" dizzies). That code is definitely the G40. Not sure about the 0040 code.

I have pdf on replacing the Hall sender in the distributor. I will get that in the next post.

(G40) Hall sensor in distributor (3B, early AAN engines) or camshaft position Hall Effect sensor later S4/S6 AAN engine). Distributor alignment, faulty sender, Mis-located sensor & distributor, Cam timing possibly incorrect on AAN engine, Check lower Crankshaft Gear keyway Symptom: Engine will not start, power loss, check engine light may come on during driving above certain RPM

        Thanks for that.

I did have a look through those first two links previously , but the last one was a new one so thanks again for that.

Was doing a cambelt change , and have it a quick check before putting everything back together and she ran fine. Came back to it a few days later a and she just ticked over.

Looks like I will be venturing doing the Hal sensor mod.
        Thanks again

Not sure what you mean by "ticked over" but if the engine started, its probably not the G40. It is needed to start the engine.

Mechanical failure means either your belt has slipped or the dizzy is not adjusted correctly.
Check for belt slippage immediately. If all the marks are OK, adjust the distributor correctly as instructed in factory manual.

Just an update and ta muchly for the input gents.
Finally got some free time and managed to skulk away into the garage to get to the bottom off me issue.

Sure enough went back round and double checked and reset everything and hey presto , she lives. Although I probably would have got there quicker if I had of removed the mass airflow cable (still had the inter cooler of when testing) doh.

Thanks again for the advice. MOT next and back out coasting the highland roads I go.

                  Good news.

However, I am not sure what the exact problem ended up to be. Which device wasn't plugged in properly?
