    Turbo trouble

My turbo is just about to let go...

Over the last few weeks the car has developed a whine/vibration once into boost. It was initially only sporadic at high boosts and high rpms, but over the course of the last month or two, the whine/vibration is such that now, in 6th, above 3000rpm and whenever out of vacuum, the whine/vibration manifests itself.

Oddly, it doesn't seem to manifest itself in the lower gears, but then we know the load on the unit is higer (= spin faster? That said I always thought there would be a unique relationship between boost and turbine speed such that I'd get the whine/vibration even in the lower gears?) when boosting from low down the rpm range in the higher gears.

Before the thing blows itself apart, are AET the best source for re-conditioned turbos?

They are quoting me £150-465 for a re-conditioned unit. They have a free inspect and diagnose service whereupon you can decide what you want done to the unit. 4-5 days between getting it off the car and having it back in your possession.

A new one ex-stock will set me back £650 from AET.

Vagparts are quoting £790.83 for a new unit.

All Audi are checking their inventory for a second hand one and have a couple: £175+VAT, guaranteed for 3 months FWIW.

Any suggestions on replacement units much appreciated?

    Haven't checked Ebay....

    Cheers.

Just a replacement for the stock unit.

        Budget won't stretch any further.

Would be interested in the second hand unit if its history is kosher and it still supports 1.1 bar with no problems.

        Cheers.

You could always try Turbo Dynamics or Turbo Technics for minor/major (turbo) service/overhaul/rebalance/etc. Either will do you an exchange unit as well. Prices vary between the two. No connection to either, but on experience and other people's comments (different thread) would probably go for Dynamics. Don't be fooled by the websites - both companies have pretty much the same kit and do pretty much the same things - Technics just shout about it on the website a bit louder. Dynamics do have a balancing machine, but it's not on their website.
          Ck.
Shocked, exhausted, hosed, bushed, dumped, chipped, mounted, filtered, gauged, packed, intermittantly wiped and braked. I mean broken. Now, about the car...

I used AET for a refurb to standard spec, service was great, trubo looked brand new and the total cost was £260 + VAT about a year ago. I know others on here have used AET and I've never heard anything bad.

              Cheers gentlemen.

I'm leaning towards a AET refurb unit although I'm debating whether to just stick an RS2 unit in there with everything else absolutely stock and get a Mihnea map.

Its not optimum but I'm not bothered about that. I've got a bike.

Would I be able to keep the stock injectors and get a unique map that would cater for the extra puff of the RS2 unit? Would that net me 300hp?

              Thats all I'm looking for.

              Comments much obliged.

PS: Is the stock RS2 exhaust 3"?
