    URS6 Camblet change.Advice needed.

I want to do a cambelt change on the S6.As a novice (on this car anyway) what parts should i buy apart from the belt, tensioner, idler and waterpump so i can avoid the possible pitfalls that could go wrong?

    Thermostat
Crank pulley (new oem is about £30, or a billet steel one about £90)
    Serpentine belt

It is an easy time to change the sensor (hall?) at the cam gear.

I presume you have a way of locking the crank pulley, and a big breaker bar?

AAN workshop manual is on Mike's site.

Here is a link to the excellent AAN timing belt DIY by Fred M. that I used when I did mine in 2010. I borrowed the proper crank lock and crankbolt tools and a 3/4" breaker bar and 3/4" torque wrench from local UrS6 owner. All necessary in my opinion.

Timing belt, water pump, idler pulley are the minimum. I also did a new OE crank sprocket and the turbo coolant return hose under the intake manifold (easy because I also did the block to rad hose at the same time). Cam sensor isn't a bad idea since it will never get better access-wise. I also did the front crank seal (with proper extraction tool) and cam seal (again, because access is easy).

          YMMV

Thanks Dave,Ryan and Andy for your input.I had a quick look and the how to guides look great.I dont have these special tools but do have have pictured here my 5ft long pole i used to use for removing Leaf springs on Triumph Spitfires and Gt6,s with an nice little upturn at the end.It came in really handy removing driveshaft bolts on the 90 20v which were factory torqued to 200NM plus 90 degrees so should be fine with the S6 crankshaft bolt. Will anyone be able to lend me the correct tools needed?

I am thinking use a genuine audi waterpump, tensioner which is INA i think correct me if i am wrong,INA idler pulley and a Contitech timing belt which i think is original audi. Can anyone categorically confirm that please.I forgot to ask for a new Crankshaft bolt, medium strength loctite and a new cranshaft sprocket. What do you guys use and advice on the best quality parts to buy? Have i covered the bases here? Don't want to mess it up!!

I asked Amersham Audi,my local centre they said timing belts NLA but when i rang Stafford Audi as that's where we used to get all our cambelts done (were 50% cheaper) they said they could order a genuine cambelt which kind of flies in the face of all the conventional wisdome on this forum as i have read so many times Cambelts NLA or is that just RS2?

Anyway the Joke is Stafford Audi wanted to charge me £889.86 to do the job quoting me 6hrs because they haven't done one in a long time but would only charge less by the hr if they did it in 4 hrs. How long should it take a pro to do this job? Cheers.

The red bucket has Error404's Molases concoction in for rust removal and a good S2 front bumper for the S2 look replica.

That bar should be perfect. (provided your socket is up to the job )

I just got sent an AAN timing belt by ECP in error for my 3B, its a Continental Contitech, so still avaliable. They also supplied an INA idler pulley, also incorrect for a 3B

You can borrow a tool or make one quite easily, just needs notched pipe or box to go into the pulley and something to stop it turning, weld on a bar, or stillsons onto the ground etc.

I have a brand new Audi crank pulley still in its bag if you want it cheap, as I bought a billet one instead?

I had to use a puller to get the crank pulley off my damper, you could knock it off using longer bolts.

              Nice v6 bumper btw.

Cheers andy for your help, its much appreciated for sure!

I don't have a 27mm? 3/4 " drive socket or 3/4" t wrench so will buy one. My sockets otherwise are up to the job, funny enough my Sykes Pickavant 3/8 12pt set was bought from halfords years ago and they have been brill) and more recently Teng 6 point and only because they feel really nice to use a couple of Facom sets one 3/8" the other 1/2". I used to be a tools buyer so can't help indulging occasionally

Excellent stuff putting up that picture of the AAN timing belt (CT515) i will now know if they have supplied the right one.

Yes the V6 bumper came from up your way Audibits2. I am quite pleased with it but it does have 2 lugs missing where the undertray locates so slightly annoying for my OCD i suffer with and made famous on here by someone else. It came of a cabby so i will fit my headlamp washer jets to the bumper for the authentic S2 look.Just need a good S2 avant rear bumper?

I saw your post about the incorrectly supplied parts-really annoying and i hope ECP supply me with the right belt as thats where i am getting it.

Thanks for the offer. How much do you want for the Crank Sprocket?I think audi want £30 for them.

The amount of wrong parts ecp have supplied me and others I know over the years is laughable(I haven't bothered with them for a few years now).It took them 5 attempts at getting the right clutch a few weeks back for a mate, all because he thought he could save £15

Hi Spink, that's why i order much of my stuff from audi because i know it's good quality plus it will be correct 99% of the time and for something so vital as a cambelt change it's not worth penny pinching .

Too many people try to make small savings but conveniently forget all the time and trouble it took them to work out what part they needed and as you say then the wrong parts are supplied. We are all learning, know no one knows it all, but as an experienced motorist you do learn. In my case I am not keen on the rear discs Audi fitted to our A4 a few years ago. Those discs have worn very quickly much quicker than the fronts which i changed and yet the fronts are biased to around 80% so work that one out.

The front discs i changed and these were Brembo as that was what G+S supplied at the time and big 50% saving over audi prices. They have been brilliant and are still in perfect unworn state.I would now always seek and prefer Brembo discs for all my cars if can get them.

A month ago or so my RS2 had the cambelt replaced together with crank pulley, but NOT the water pump. It took the local VW dealer (former Audi) around 4 hours to complete. Total price including parts was approx. GBP 550.

That seams like a reasonable deal being a main dealer and the fact they must have charged around £120.00 an hour. Nice to know that it's definately no more than a 4 hr Job at a main dealer.

Some nice new parts came in from Audi a couple days ago for the cambelt change. They could only supply one bolt for the waterpump the rest NLA but at least i was able to get the crankshaft sprocket bolts and the big bolt.

The photos should be clear enough for you to read the part numbers next to the respective parts .
