what size wastegate on an 5cil turbo?

my tuning shop says that an 44mm gate should be anough. but i see alot guys that have problems with an 44mm and buy a bigger gate like an tiaL 60mm

when do we need a bigger gate, stroker/ 2.2 ??

    thinking of an gtx3582r

is there an rule to know what size gate is needed?

the lower the boost you want to run the bigger your gate needs to be

it's mainly what the car is built for, what hp you want to run and how the boost is managed.. there's a few people running gt40r with a standard wastegate no problem but in involves a lot of controllers to get it done...

I have a PT6766CEA with tial 60mm... for sale if you need

I think it is more to do with how well the head flows. The better the flow the less boost is needed for a given power level. I think this is why hamish had to go for a huge wastegate as he has JNL mega head. If stock head I would think stock wastegate is fine. Wait till experts turn up to confirm or shoot me down though.

Also depends on placement on the manifold. If it's at 90 degrees to flow you'll need a bigger gate than a well placed one which has a better flow path.

I like to run an garrett gtx or hta turbo. And im goining for an turbosmart wastegate. The flow more.

Car is fot street use, but a track day is also what the car is seeing a few times a year.

            head is cnc flowed
            high lift cams
High flow 2chamber intake from furans
            2.5 motor
            krb exhaust manifold

hope to run an gtx/ hta 35

this is by far the biggest factor.

Nobody seems to mention boost creep being a factor.

I'd for that turbo want a turbosmart 50mm pro-gate as a starting point.

then a turbosmart 60mm pro-gate should do his job perfect also for the future

                then the next question,
my manifold has an tail 44 now.
does the pipe size from the tail44 be enough for an 60mm gate?
or do i need to get a bigger pipe diameter for the 60mm gate?
or can i "stretch" (dont who i call it) the pipe to a bigger pipe diameter?

the size quoted is the size of the piston not the mounting point. You need to look at the turbomart pdf for the mounting diameter

the diameter of the pipe for the wastegate doesn't matter then?
you could put an 60mm waste gate on an 40mm pipe???

Didn't say that I said the size quoted for the wastegate is the size of the piston. The mounting point diameter is not always one for one with the piston size. But yes some times the piston is bigger than the mounting diameter
