Good day and hello (this is my first post after weeks of lurking)
I recently bought a 1995 Audi S6 2.2 Avant Auto. It has been neglected for years and has in fact been off the road with no MOT for nearly 2 years. I have known the car for three years and always had a soft spot for it so when the chance came up to buy it at a knockdown price, I went for it! When it is recommissioned and working, it will be perfect mountain bike transport.
Feast!

It has a very long list of issues which I won't bore you with here but the one engine issue I need to address before I put it back on the road is what I believe to be a noisy oil pump.
I bought it knowing there was a rumbly bearing noise which I thought might be either something driven by the auxiliary belt or the water pump, I have run the car with the aux. belt removed and the noise remained unchanged, so I had a look at the water pump and it was weeping a little coolant past the O ring so needed fixing anyway, when I removed and inspected it, it seemed to have a lot of play in the bearings so I figured that had been generating the noise, fitted a new water pump and ran the engine again but the noise was still there, unchanged
The cambelt and tensioner were fairly recently replaced prior to my ownership and are in good condition, the tensioner is like new to be honest.
After some youtube research - my noise is very similar to this... http://youtu.be/9rgOXb9kxrE
Now my question to you experienced guys is, could the noise realistically be anything else? This is the first Audi I have owned or worked so I am not familiar with the engine at all but if it is the oil pump, where is the best place to buy a new one? - I am assuming you have to buy the whole thing as one part?
And second question, after reading up as much as I could on related threads, I think I am correct in saying you can get the sump off without having to take the gearbox off?
Any help appreciated.
