project 7a on hold, 7a/3b hybrid in consideration!

well, after sevral productive calls to various tuners and conversation with my mechanic, i won't be doing the motor work this year. it appears that the costs involved with rebuilding the 7a to stock or overbore config will cost almost as much as being very skillful and sniffing out bargains as well as some homebrew work and turboing the sucker. that's how much the parts damn well cost around here! so this year i'm going to concentrate on getting the wheels all pointing in the same direction and making sure they stay there better than they do now and figure out exactly what i want to do and how to do it.

maybe in the meantime i'll find that mythical older person owned low milage b4 90 that has been hit in the rear and is selling for $750.......not bloody likely but hey, you never know!

thanks for the help you folks gave me

if you are going to do it, do it right the first time! That's my modo. Take your time and consider every possibility!
So, why are you going to look for a b4 90 hit in the rear? wanting the 12V v6? It's a heavy motor, that's my only debate with it...355 lbs.

    Good luck!

oh, alright then, i'll wait till i find the same in a 2.7tt

how much does the 5 weigh? can't be TOO much less, my buddy and i were unable to lift it onto the engine stand, and we're both pretty sturdy guys. (coulda been the beer we were sweating out that early sunday morning though!) the v6 will be pretty cheap to run if my mom's 96 a6 wagon is any indication and if i were to find said mythical B4, i'd be able to part the thing out and probably break even.

i figure i just got in a hurry cuz i got my spare for so little cash. it may turn into money wasted but at least it wasn't thousands wasted, just a few hundred.

Well, the I-5 20vt weighs approximately 215 pounds with all engine internals...not including flywheel and turbo and intercooler plumbing.
I was originally going to put a 2.7tt engine into my B4 because of the relative ease of installation. It would sit right on my 12v V6 engine mounts, and I'd need some custom plumbing. Custom headers were also needed to clear the steering rack. Anyway, due to it's monster weight with 2x turbos and a large custom intercooler, i decided against it because I want something lighter than what I have now. I have removed about 158lbs from the front end of my B4 with a Euro-bumper, battery to the trunk, ditched A/C (including compressor) and carbon hood. With that said, my handling improved a ton each time, so I am now on a quest to get a lightweight engine up there. I sold the spare 2.7tt engine I bought...and already my suspension has gobbled up that money with a nice sum of custom bits (sway bars, drop links, some more brake upgrades, too). I had also put a lot of time into working an RS4 manifold, but I sold that too.
It would be a great engine for straightline performance, but hitting a corner with a 3100 lbs car and 65/35 weight distribution is not for me...

Make your decision wisely...I am just telling you what I have experienced so far and why I made the decisions that I have made.

also, about the 12v V6 motor...i think it's a great motor...very reliable. I had a '93 B4 that I put 210,000 miles on it. I'd say about 50% of those miles were very spirited, too! The only thing I recommend changing immediately on those engines are the camshaft position sensor (hall sender). Those caught me once and the fuel-pump twice (but that's not exactly 'engine' related). Before getting rid of that car (255K on the clock), I promptly bought my '95 with low mileage and previous owner was a tech for Audi. I couldn't have chosen a better car, IMO!

Well, I am thinking AAN since here in the US, we never got aby/adu...we only got 3B and AAN. I am still thinking AAN, but also thinking about ABZ (4.2L Aluminium V8). I am not looking for gobs of HP, just the lightest package available.

Also, I do a lot or road racing, and with a turbo car, you can only run for so long before you need to cool down the components for a bit...

Plus, more HP = more lag, so if I go AAN, I'll be going with a turbo that'll reach full boost by 2K rpm with a 300hp upper limit. Again, not gobs of HP, it's all about handling, handling and handling. As of right now, I feel confident that I can loose a 996 in the twists, i just need to reach that 300hp mark....

If I go ABZ, well, I can reliably have 350hp, quicker throttle response in the low-rpm, and no added cooling time at the track. Less torque than the AAN, though.

Each has it's own pros and cons in my book...
i'm going to spend the next few months deciding and weighing my options.

you and i have different goals in mind. i'm looking for a rock solid, reliable car versus you looking to turn it into a cornering monster. given the insurance situation up here (the company dropping me like a hot potato at the first sign of go fast mods) keeping it mild is the order of the day. i have a fairly mint corrado vr6 for the really fun stuff in the summer, the coupe is intended as a way to get superior winter performance and still have style and fun, not as a giant money hole. (speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?)

yes, that v6 weighs a sh!tload more (ALOT more than i figured!) but for what i care about with this car, i could care less.

just outta curiosity, how much does a 1.8t and ancillaries weigh? i'd imagine similar to the NA 5 cyl...

It is true...I am looking for a cornering monster. Did I mention that I autocross every week of the summer!? The lighter the car, the better the time. Obviously, the driver has something to do with it, but I have grown with my car and done better than instructors with e36 M3s with coilovers...
I'm about set with my suspension...obviously it'll need some fine-tuning after the diet in the front, but I am completely satisfied with it right now.

The 1.8t is a nice reliable engine if you don't dog it...they have oil delivery problems. But like i said, for a daily driver with a spirited right foot, the 1.8T would be nice. A tuning company here has blown three 1.8T in three separate competitions during a long sweeping right turn. I don't know how much they weigh, but I'd bank on it being a bit lighter than the I5. A rough estimate would be that an A4 1.8t weighs 143 pounds less than an A4 2.8...so when it comes to the engine weight, 355lbs (V6) - 143lbs (difference in car weights) = 212lbs. 212lbs for the 1.8T includes the added weight of intercooler, turbo, intake plumbing....so it is a little lighter than an AAN or 3B....

well trust me, i do think the AAN will dominate, but I just need to decide.
The V8 is aluminum, so it's relatively lightweight.
I'll be using a custom EFI with either set-up, so the only difference in custom modifying work is engine mounts for the V8.
The AAN would require equal amounts of custom labor with downpipe and intercooler plumbing.

I'll keep the forum updated as my project unfolds....i'm so busy with other things at the moment.

i would agree with that 100%. as for the power, sure, the max power of a 5 will be higher that the 1.8...but it does have and extra cylinder and displacement.....but that doesn't matter to me because of my previous statments of not wanting a balls out car. it would be alot easier to get to 200hp (using that simply because it's a nice round number) in the 1.8 vs the 7a.

you guys with your mega motors may think i'm being a weenie by sticking to such a low number but insurance is really becoming a problem around here thanks to all of the fast and the furious sh!theads that have ruined car modding for everyone. because of all the ricers being dicks and street racing, companies make the automatic assumption that any performance mod has been performed with the intent to race. obviously, the company does not want to facilitate someone breaking the law, (even though speeding is against the law and by giving us insurance they're facilitating that offence) the company will drop you and you will have to pay large premiums at another company (if you can get one) because you no longer have a clear insurance history. the last resort is to go to the company that insures high risk drivers (people with DUIs or reckless driving convictions etc....) and basically bend over and take it like a man

so to summarize, if there are any people out there reading this who take their life a 1/4 mile at a time, take your "motec sytem exhaust" and shove it up your ***!!!!

Luckily, my insurance isn't affected by what I do to the car, so that's not a concern to me. Besides, I save my speeding for the track, it's the only relatively safe place to do it. Good luck, mate!
