BMW cyclone oil separator on Audi.

I'm searching the best design of the swirl pot/oil separator to separate oil/air from the fumes.I found the cyclone oil separator oem. part from a bimmer.personally i like the cyclone design but the inlet/outlet position is least offset. will it have any troubles with the oil surged and being drooled up directly from the inlet port?.I have not digged up the diameter of the inlet/outlet port but it seems identical on our Audi? Will this work on our Breather system?Has anyone ever tried on it?

    how cyclone separator works..

    hi
in your previous thread you told you had a small portion of oil in the mann provent(after you made the baffle in the sump).
but it is provided for separate oil from air, and Return the oil back to the sump so i dont understand what is the problem here?
do you get to many oil in the intake?

looks an interesting design and worth trying !

In cold climates the outer part of the cyclone needs to be insulated well to reduce hot air water condensation inside the tube.

After only 3,000 miles of driving this 2.0T A5 filled up our Clean Catch Oil Separator. The A5 only has 5,000 miles on the odometer, and is equipped with a K04 Turbo charger, K&N intake and a high flow turbo-back exhaust system. To see more about our Clean Catch Oil Separators click here: http://blackforestindustries.com/blog/2011/08/04/clean-catch-crankcase-oil-separator/

The "chimney" inside could be slightly longer, but design is nice, light and easy to mount.

A cyclone type, gas-liquid separator has a gas lead-through pipe penetrating an upper end wall of a cyclone chamber and extending downward to have a gas outlet in the cyclone chamber. A generally annular baffle plate is provided on an outer circumference of the gas lead-through pipe in the vicinity of the gas outlet to generally divide. the inside of the cyclone chamber into upper and lower. spaces. Accordingly, swirl flow formed in the upper space is prevented from being drawn directly by a negative pressure of the gas lead-through pipe without swirling sufficiently, so that separation efficiency is improved.

      another interesting version & video:

        Nick,
i have tried to spirited driving and still noticed a portion of oil at the top section
of the Provent 200.the baffled sump helped but not 100% .i believe those amount of oil came out of the head from the oil surged.
from my experiences, sooner or later there'll be some of oil deposited in intake tracts. in the meanwhile i will be checking the amount of oil in the Provent 200.
i drained the oil through out the oil return line from the turbo but adding one way valve though.

i think it's better to drain the oil back to the sump with a nipple on the sumpplug
with my mann provent setup i have only condensation in the can and totaly no oil
a week ago i made a 250km drive with 37°c outside with some hard pulls and yet only condensation in the mann provent.maybe you can made the tubes on the engine like mine setup,i can send you pictures and a drawing
i made also an extra tube on the valvecover.
you have 3 connections on the mann provent,on my setup the bottom connection goes to sumpplug, big connection half way goes to intake turbo and the upper goes with t-split to valvecover and engineblock
i dont use the origional crankcase ventilation sertup or valves, only open big tubes
also disconnect the one way valve under throttlebody
          how is yours connected?

I've been fabbing cyclone separators for more than a decade, and it works like a charm in an I5.

However, in high output setup, one vent is not enough, need to vent bot, the 35mm one from the back of the block, and the 16mm one from the back of the head in to a properly sized unit, with a large drain back to the engine.

If the cone on the bottom of the cyclone gets filled with oil, it will spit it all over the engine bay.

But if vent is big enough, and drain works, the outlet on top of the cyclone stays absolutely dry.

In the pic below, there is a cyclone I built on a bit over 500hp 2.0tfsi. You can see smoke coming out of that little cone filter, but after two days of racing, the filter is not even damp. Nore it's surroundings.

In I5, problem is the pcv vents are at the back of the block. In extreme applications oil packs at the back of the cranckase and valve cover on hard acceleration, and it causes pure oil to end up in to the pcv tubing.

Should that happen, relocate the 16mm vent in to the front end of the valve cover.

Of course you will have some oil there if you use stock pcv outlet in the back of the head.

                  Hi Nick,
i still have a full stock system and put the Provent 200 after the back pancake valve.
the outlet of Provent 200 plumb it back to the turbo inlet.I'm going to get rid of old system.only reason is i need to have a definite plan for my own system before removing the stock one.i need to define what size of the hose i'm going for since we also have 14/19/25(Provent 200)/30mm on each inlets/outlets.Much appreciate for your setup photos Nick.

I believe there're couple versions o them depends on the models but mainly they do the same task.

                      Hello Repo,
Thanks for the inputs.Recently i just added the baffle in my sump to prevent
the oil surged under high G-force acceleration.it seems i see lesser oil accumulated
in the oil separator tank.As we know there're 2 sources of the breather 1.crankcase
                      2. cylinder head.I'm going to make sure the remaining oil is apparently coming from the head.I'm going to disconnect the 30mm hose from the block and 14mm hose at the back of the rocker cover and running 2 separated bottles and checking the excessive oil surged.was that good idea?If the excessive oil coming out of the head.my plan is going to use the metal tube that run along under rocker cover to return the breather fumes to the front of turbo inlet.i'm going to drill out 3-4 holes at the front section of that tube and might be adding a baffle sheet to prevent oil surged under rocker cover and connecting the back end to the oil separator, welded shut the stock 14mm breather outlet at the back of rocker cover.OR drill out the new breather outlet in front of the rocker cover.
                      Cheers,
