Hi, i just finished my 10vt coupe quattro and i have a problem with my alternator v-belt, it keeps on braking after a hard drive and quick gearchanges. is it possible to find a clutch v-belt pulley for trapezoidal type of belts? I tried to loosen it more, it lasts a bit longer but in the end it brakes.

Poor alignment sounds the cause.
Did it on mine -someone else had fitted it all, but alternator wasn't parallel to drive pulley so it broke.
Spaced with washers and seems ok.Comment

I've got mine lined up nicely and I snap V belts regularly. The belt get thrown off the pulleys when I hit the limiter which seems to be the main cause of the problem on my setup. Your need a serpentine belt setup or some tensioners to keep the belt from slapping about under load.91 Modded 3B

I have been through these issues with my alternator belt. When it hit the limiter it would flip it inside out then throw it off. If it doesn't hit the limiter then it stays on. I lined it up and shimmed it but it would still do it. I then moved onto driving it from the rear V on the crank pulley which is deeper. This has stopped the issue. I realise this might not be possible for everybody as you have other things driving off the V belt.
Like has been said the only way to 100% cure it is to go to a multi ribbed set up.Comment

the rear of the pulley drives the steering pump in my case, the midle is empty and in front is the alternator v-belt. They are all lined up. I'm afraid the belt will break an get into my timing belt case. That would not be pretty. I'll try to modify an multi ribbed clutch pulley and see what happens.Comment
