    battery dead!

    Hi Guys,

Not run my car for about 2 weeks and i thought i'd taker her for a spin this evening but car won't start.

Pulled out the jump leads but even then i can't get her to turn over. Only sound i get is like a machine gun clicking.

Any ideas - might be a bit thick here but is this just that there is so little charge left that its not able to turn it over and thats the resulting noise?????

    Failing that any ideas?

    David :eek2:

    David,

Open the bonnet m8...If the thieves around your way are anything like ours, there may be a load of wires, a couple of driveshafts and no engine & gearbox

Failing that, it could be a problem with your starter motor

Probably just a dead battery. If there's no juice left the starter motor solenoid will click (like a machine gun) but the starter wont turn.

I had the same problem with my old passat which has sat at work since I bought my avant. Even jump leads or a boost pack wouldn't get it going. Slapped a new battery on it and it worked a treat.

Try charging the battery overnight or replace it. A nice 000 915 105 AD should sort it (61Ah 540CCA).

This reminds me, At Billing everyone wanted to know what I'd do if my battery failed (no door locks) and I proved I could climb in through the boot. It dawned on me the other day that I wouldn't need to climb in at all as the battery is in the boot. Still it amused people to watch me clambering over my interior

David, i wouldn't rush out and but a battery just yet! Do you ABC's man! Charge the battery slowly overnight, check for any drains! also check the charge rate both amps and volts, loaded and unloaded! It will probably need a battery but youll kick your self if it was only the boot light staying on or sommat!!!!!

and also.... IS the battery flat? I mean, turn all the lights on, fan on, radio on etc... will it power all those things? if it will, then it's not the battery, but either starter motor or earth strap.

Stick the car in gear and rock it hard to try to move the starter motor, it may be jammed out. Then as daft as this sounds... hit the starter motor damn hard with a hammer! if it's jammed or not throwing out the starter gear, then your aim is to 'jog' the motor into freeing and then maybe turning over. Also check the earth strap from the battery to the body for any signs of corrosion.

Like Glen said, charge the battery up, then when known to be fully charged, try to start her, if its clicks again, it probably isn't the battery!

                  She's alive again

Pulled out the battery and checked the cells as its an original VAG battery and it seems that there wasn't enough or any liquid visible in any of the 6 chambers - filled that up with de-ionised water, lobbed it on charge for 90 mins till the voltage had crept back up to about 12v then shoved it back in and she spluttered into life again!

Gave it a 25 mile blat at 10:30 last night on greasy roads - nice 4 wheel drifts around the local r/abouts then home for a rest. lets see if its ok now over the next few days.

Also popped in some special de-scale tablets that reacts with the buildup on the plates so should be kill or cure.

Appreciate you help as usual guys!!!!!!!

                  what a forum!!!
