i had the same thing happen on a 300zx, turned out that turbo seals were getting tired. with the cats in situ/rear silencer they seemed to help filter out the smoke & there wasn't any visible.

with cats/silencers removed there was traces of smoke, mainly when engine was idling for a few mins.

didn't do anything about it, and it never got any worse

what about valve stem seals/piston rings.

still think it was the cats masking it.

most likely suspect is turbo id say,but could be oil seals or rings slightly worn, the cats will hide slight smoke

            Oil

JUST BEEN READING SOME OLD THREAD...............................

when cold the 10 number is important, and 5w is too thin, really no good for turbo motors and even worse so with 0w. the w60 number means viscosity when hot and the higher the better for good engine protection on hot surfaces such as turbo bearings and so on...

TO BE HONEST, SINCE I STARTED USING MOBIL1 (0-40W) THAT IS WHEN
I STARTED TO BURN OIL EVEN WITH CATS ON. I BOUGHT 9 X 1LITRE BOTLES
AT GTI INTERNATIONAL AS JOB LOT.
ENGINE REBUILT INC STEM SEALS( I HOPE), HEAD GASKET,HEAD BOLTS,TURBO, WCFV OIL BREATHER VALVE(HALF MOON SHAPED).
IS THE OIL TOO THIN, I WILL TRY USING VAG SYNTRA SEMI-SYN. SEE IF THAT CHANGES ANYTHING.
VERY RARELY HAVE I HEARD OF PISTON RINGS GO. :mischeif:

i read your 1st post wrong. i thought it said (mobil 10 40). like you say zero grade is probably too thin, would definatley go back to using 10/40 or 10/60.

like you say since running 0 grade oil you noticed oil consumption. was higher. now you've removed cats you can see where its going!!

i used to have a bit of smoke using 10w-40 but since changing to 10w-60 its stopped, also a very small leak somewhere (i.e. drips) has stopped to and the hot idle has much improved to a steady 2-2.2bar.

Previous to that i was using either Synta Gold or Shell Helix and both gave the same probs with a little smoke and increased dripping and consumption.

                  Get a thicker oil.

Cat replacement pipes will reduce the back pressure a lot. Because of this the pressure differnece across the turbo oil seals is alot more - oil pressure is at 5 bar - if your back pressure has been reduced by a couple of bar then they start leaking/blowing through.

                    Good news

Just changed oil & oil filter from mobil1(0-40W) to DX3(10-40W) from my local
                    Partco autoparts.
DX3 low visc. 10-40W resale price 17.39+ vat Discount price 7+vat
Oil filter resale price 9.92+vat Discount price 2.70+vat
Took 15 minutes & Guess what??? Great improvement.
The old oil (0-40W) was black and THIIINN almost like water.
I can't believe it only done 3000 miles.
Will run it for 2 weeks just to clean mobil1 (0-40W) out the system & change it to Castrol RS (10-60W)
Thanks for all the feedback guys.
engine feels more stableneven when hot.

its a pain but you could refit cats, just to make sure it reduces smoke, if it does, then i still think it may be turbo seals, don't know what else to suggest

The grease monkeys who done my exhaust took 3 attempts to get it
right after exhaust was blowing at joints & banging against diff.
But the sound is awsome. .
I think turbo might have to come off. now thats another battle with
                          AET turbos.

AET are very good. I have bought 2 turbos for my car there (different sizes) and also turbos for customers cars. Decats will make a car smoke more BTDT.
