          Hi guys.

I have KW #85 which is from a Tornado Red Sport Quattro which is now in France.

If I had to guess the path this block took I would say it was pulled from the above car and eventually found its way into Lehmann's shop. He might have sleeved the block but he might not have. The block and engine went to Bruno in NY who used it and then I bought the car from Bruno. I've put a total of 1500 miles on it without any incident that I can trace to the block. I rebuilt the motor and found some slightly bent valves which was robbing me of power, but all is good now and the block and head have excellent cold leak down numbers in the high 90s. There is no porosity when cold. I think the weight difference is about 75 lbs which is a very good amount to not have hanging over the front axle.

I can pick up the block with the crank and pistons inside by myself. The KW rods and bearings are different than regular WX or AAN stuff.

          James

Yeah I thought it was only the KW engine which officially got the alloy block - now was that 2144, 2226 or something else ?

Yes 2144 is what is listed in my SCCA log book and we all know why Audi reduced the size of the motor for racing legality.

What is curious is why they kept that size even when engaging in later series that didn't really have much restriction on displacement.

Betting back to blocks, I think one could easily find Aluminum blocks with problems, but at the same time I think its crazy to say they're all bad. Its just as bizarre to say they'll go bad eventually. I mean everything will go bad eventually, so you look at what you've got and make your best decision based on how well you think its built. So if anything, if you find an Aluminum block go through the process of getting it completely checked out by someone who knows what they're doing. Lehmann in Liechtenstein is the first shop which comes to mind. Most sport quattros seem to have had their KW blocks pulled, but there are many out there that didn't and they are running fine. You can see a few of them at www.sportquattro.info.

              Take it easy,
              James

The 2144cc - is that derived from 'effective capacity' under 3000cc using a multiplier of 1.4 from those days ?

Hold on - isn't 2141cc the funky size at 1.4 for homologation under 3000cc which Audi originally had to run with for those regulations ?

What is exact bore and stroke on the KW engine ?

I thought the Sport quattro had 2133cc to comply with the 3000cc rule.
79.3mm Bore and 86.4mm Stroke IIRC.

I think the rods are the same as the usual suspects, GV, WX, WR and MB. But most of the engine is unique. Due to its length, I guess.

The Rods in my car are definately different.
I'm not going to say KW rods are different, cause I really don't know if the rods in my car are KW. But they're not quite like WX or AAN rods. They could be KW rods since Audi designed the KW motor with 8000 rpms in mind.

I'd be VERY interest to do a deal on a alloy block if someone knows to one
