    RS2 Auxillary radiator options.

Has anyone tried replacing the auxillary radiator on an RS2 with one for the 7A engine? Only difference I can see is that the RS2 surface area is larger. The attachement points and overall length seem to be the same.

I'm in Canada and can't order an RS2 specific rad over here locally but the ones for the 7A are readily available, and a lot cheaper than shipping one from Europe/UK.

I know lots have bypassed this rad but I'd prefer not to go that route and don't want to pay an arm and a leg either for the RS2 specific one.

    Thanks,
    Dave

I too didn't want to delete the aux rad in the S2. They are costly but that it how they were designed. I didn't presume to be more knowledgeable than the Audi engineers, so I put my hand in my pocket. Not sure if that was the right or wrong decision but it cools well. If it aint broke......

The one from a 7A will be fine in Canada, if you were in Saudi or somewhere else very hot then there may be an argument for using the genuine RS2 unit and getting all the cooling you can. A nice new 7A item will be more efficient than a 20 year old RS2 unit with half the fins missing etc.

In my opinion deleting the Aux rad is only appropriate when the air-con rad has also been removed to improve flow to the main radiator.

        I agree!

In Italy we can get very hot summers (not this one ) and I would'nt delete the aux rad here.
I could go with a 7A unit myself if I'm going to cahange mine though.
Anyone can get a part # for the 7A?

        Thanks!

          Gents,

Not sure what costs you are being quoted for the auxiliary rad bit it may be worth considering an aluminium one, I have found one that fits and will last longer and is more efficient....... just a thought !

Why do people think the aux rad is a good design? it bypasses the main rad for a less efficient cooling mechanism, the best thing is too junk it and replace the main rad with an ali rad.

time and technology moves on, show me a modern day audi with a similar setup?

Not an Audi but the original VW R32 had an auxiliary radiator.

                True Jamo....
But after twenty years we're facing a point where we should consider everything on a different point of view which's something in between performance and heritage aswell...
Would you propose the same if we where talking about a Sport quattro?

In terms of time and technology...
I can tell you that a FIAT 500 Abarth SS (leaving alone more salty cars) it's an hard bite for any "reasonably tuned" RS2 on a proper climbing road here on my mountains.

I agree there will always be cheaper ways to solve a problem with these cars but there is something to be said about keeping a rare classic car as stock as possible. No one over here is going to be able to tell if I swap an RS2 rad for a 7A rad but seeing hoses that are capped off will look out of place.

Anyone know what an RS2 aux rad is selling for across the pond? I'm looking at $350 for a new 7A radiator shipped to my door in Canada.

I believe it is the same as an S2, if so I bought mine for 210 GBP or so a while ago.

heritage? so we shouldn't use aftermarket, bushes, top mounts, exhausts, alloys, wheel bearings, radios etc etc

Do neither, on my 1st s2 I took the aux rad and had it recored by a local shop cost £70, as long as your end tanks are good this is the best option.

Aux rads really are a waste of money, i've run with and without, and without on a new rad the car performed better also due to the increase airflow from removing that rad. Send the money on a new main Ali rad

If it's leaking cap it off and get rid of it. It's really quite unnecessary if the main radiator is functioning properly. For OEM sake, source one at the best price (probably EU) and then replace if you want but have no qualms about running without it for a time.

I've run >400hp with my S2 and now RS2 without it, no problems on overheating and oil temps only elevated with sustained full throttle, which is where it could be effective by increasing the max rate of heat transfer from the engine. But if you're pushing it that hard you need to go non-OEM on a lot of other things, starting with the oil cooler!

The list you put down it's pretty much radical....

top mounts bushes bearings had been purchased by Audi as well so there's no big deal to buy a bearing from SKF in terms of originality neither for a bush or a top mount...

On the other side for the sake of originality a dedicated exaust system from the same time/period made for that specific model of car, still it's accettable for vintage cars Cubs exams.

To get rid of tha aux radiator makes firstly a big change on the engine bay lay out.
Also I'm not keen to try this solution on the Stelvio pass in summer or in a motorway solid queue in a hot august here in Italy.....

                          Although I do second your:

But everyone is entitled to keep their car how they wish

Probably just for the fact that the less decent (in terms of originality) cars puts up the value over time of the good ones and this is a well known fact.
